Description
Temperåturstabiliserte polyalkylenharpikser
Oppfinnelsen angår temperaturstabiliserte termoplastiske polyester-støpeharpikser. Oppfinnelsen angår mer spesielt langtids varmestabiliserte plast-sammensetninger av polyalkylenterefthalat. Sammensetningene består av poly-alkylenteref thalatharpiks, fyllstoff-armering og stabiliserende mengder av en kombinasjon av polyamidpolymer, fenoxyharpiks og en organisk fosfonat.
De overraskende gode resultater som oppnås ved å benytte forsterkede eller armerte polyalkylen-terefthalat-. harpikser i form av polypropylenterefthalat eller polybutylen-terefthalat, som støpeplast, har i det senere vært påvist f .eks. i. US patent 3 814 725 . Disse forbedrede resultater gjelder støpeevnen og forbedrede egenskaper for den støpte gjenstand av armert polyalkylenterefthalat.
Som kjent kan forsterket polypropylenterefthalat og polybutylenterefthalat støpes og bearbeides på annen måte ved lavere temperaturer og med vesentlig kortere oppholdstid i støpeformen enn forsterket polyethylenterefhtalat. Ennå mer betydningsfullt er det at disse harpikser ikke, som forster-
ket polyethylenterefthalat, krever et kjernedanningsmiddel eller podningsmiddel for å befordre krystallinitet. Man har nylig oppdaget at slike kjernedannere og/eller formslipemid-
ler som tilsetning til forsterket polypropylenterefthalat eller forsterket polybutylenterefthalat som støpeharpikser i vesentlig grad reduserer overflatekvaliteten hos dé ut-støpte produkter, dvs. at en skinnende blank overflate blir ru, stripet og ujevn. Polypropylenterefthalat og polybuty-lenteref thalat som først ble beskrevet sammen med polyethylen-teref thalat i US patent 2 4 65 319 har lenge vært betraktet som likeverdige på området.
Et annet felt hvor man har oppnådd bedre resulta-
ter med forsterket polypropylenterefthalat bg polybutylen-terefthalat sammenlignet med tidligere støpeharpikser på om-
rådet, og særlig forsterket polyethylenterefthalat, gjelder egenskapene for støpe gjenstander av disse harpikser. Selv om forsterket polybutyl.enterefthalat har omtrent like sor styrke som polyethylenterefthalat.ved lignende forsterkning, men har f.eks. vesentlig høyere seighet) mindre vannabsorp-
sjon, bedre krympeegenskaper og gunstigere fargingsegenskaper enn polyethylenterefthalatharpikser som inneholder like mye fyllstoff.
De ovennevnte forbedrede egenskaper som er oppnådd med forsterket polypropylen- og polybutylen-terefthalat sammenlignet med ekvivalente støpeharpikser kjent fra tidligere, f.eks. polyethylenterefthalat, forklarer den senere eksplo-
sive vekst i bruk av disse termoplastiske polyestere. En grunnleggende egenskap som er nødvendig for ytterligere ekspansjon for disse harpikser er strekkfasthet-retensjon
etter langvarig utsettelse for høye temperaturer. Denne egen-
skap er av avgjørende betydning for bruk av polypropylen- og polybutylen-terefthalater på mange områder som krever gode styrkeegenskaper.
Visse støpegjenstander krever ikke bare, høy strekkfasthet men også at den støpte gjenstand beholder styrken under langvarige utsettelser for høye temperaturer. Som fagfolk vil være klar over mister termoplastiske støpeharpikser generelt en vesentlig del av strekkfastheten når de utsettes for høye temperaturer over en lengre tid. Dette gjelder for polypro-pylenteref thalat og polybutylenterefthalat. Selv om således tilsetning av forsterkende fyllstoffer øker strekkfastheten for harpiksene til et punkt hvor de kan utnyttes som bygge-harpikser, foreligger fremdeles problemer med varmestabili-
teten som begrenser bruken av harpiksene og hindrer anvendelse på mange forskjellige viktige områder. For eksempel er det mange gjenstander under panseret på biler som. fremstilt av polypropylenterefthalat eller polybutylenterefthalat gir vesentlige fordeler i forhold til de vanlige konstruksjons-
materialer. Et eksempel på en slik gjenstand er fordeler-
.lokket. Et fordelerlokk støptaav glassfiberarmert polybuty-lenteref thalat har bedre elektriske egenskaper enn termoher-dede fordelerlokk av den tidligere type. Imidlertid er det .knyttet et problem til tapet av strekkfasthet som glassfiber-forsterkede polybutylenterefthalat-fordelerlokk utsettes for med tiden på grunn av den høye temperatur under bilpanseret.
Problemet med å temperaturstabilisere polypropylen-
og polybutylen-terefthaiat,har lenge vært kjent på området. Imidlertid har man alltid vært på utkikk etter forbedringer
i temperaturstabiliteten som strakk seg over et lengre tids-
rom, slik at man kunne levere støpeharpikser som beholdt de opprinnelige fysikalske og kjemiske egenskaper etter lang-
varig utsettelse for høye temperaturer.
Oppfinnelsen er således rettet mot forbedrede poly-alkylenteref thalatharpikser som ikke er beheftet med enkelte av ulempene ved tidligere sammensetninger av polyalkylen-teref thalater . Sammensetninger med polyalkylenterefthalat-harpikser i henhold til foreliggende oppfinnelsevhar forbedret strekkfasthet vekststabilitet ved høye temperaturer sammen-
lignet med kjente sammensetninger.
Det tilveiebringes i henhold til oppfinnelsen poly-, alkylenterefthalatharpiks-sammensetninger av polypropylen-
eller polybutylen-terefthalater kombinert med et forsterkende fyllstoff som utgjør 2-60 vekt% av totalvekten og innehol-
der stabiliserende.mengder av en kombinasjon av polyamidpoly-
mer, fenoxyharpiks og organisk fosfonat,.
Grunnharpiksen er en polyalkylenterefthalatpolymer
valgt fra polypropylen- eller polybutylen-terefthalat. Disse polymere som generelt beskrives i US patent 2 465 319 kan fremstilles ut fra en tobasisk syre som terefthalsyre eller en dialkylester av terefthalsyre (særlig dimethylterefthalat),
og dioler med 3 og 4 carbonatomer. ' Egnede dioler er 1,3-propandiol, 1, 4-butandiol, 1*, 3-butandiol, 1, 2-propandiol, 1,2-butandiol, 2,3-butandiol og lignende.
Ved fremstilling av polymere som anvendes ifølge foreliggende oppfinnelse, dvs. polypropylen eller polybutylen- terefthalat, fremstilles den aktuelle bis-(hydroxyalkyl)-terefthalat som mellomproduktet. Dette bis-(hydroxy-alkyl) -teref thalat kan dannes ved å omsette dialkylesteren av terefthalsyre, hvor alkylgruppen kan inneholde fra 1 til 7 carbonatomer, med ca. 2 mol dioler som ovenfor.
Forestringsreaksjonen foregår under forhøyet temperatur og atmosfæretrykk, undertrykk eller overtrykk. Normalt vil temperaturområdene ligge mellom reaksjonsblan-dingens smeltetemperatur og opp til 250° C.
Etter at polym-basisen er fremstilt, kan man tilsette additiver for å bedre utseendet og egenskapene' for støpeharpiksen, f.eks. farvestoffer, herdemidler,,brannhindrende midler, forsterkningsmidler (armeringsmidlei;) og lignende ved omhyggelig blanding enten ved tørrblanding eller smelteblanding, blanding i ekstrudere, varmevalser eller andre blandere...
Området for egenviskositeten til polypropylen- og polybutylenterefthalat-støpeharpikser ifølge oppfinnelsen
ligger mellom ca. 0,4'og 1,2 dl/g. Fortrinnsvis er egenviskositeten 0,5 til 1,0 dl/g målt i en '8 %-ig oppløsning, basert på polymervekten, av ortho-klorfenol, ved 25° C.
Forbedrede harpikssammensetninger av polypropylenterefthalat eller polybutylenterefthalat ifølge oppfinnelsen inneholder forsterkende fyllstoffer. Dette forsterkende fyllstoff tilsettes i henhold til en foretrukken utførelse under polymerisasjonsreaksjoner mellom de monomere. Denne utførelse anvendes bare i de tilfelle hvor polymerisasjons-reaksjonen ikke påvirkes av det forsterkede fyllstoff. Et foretrukket armeringsmiddel eller forsterkningsmiddel er glassfibre som kan tilsettes, som glassfiberstumper eller kon-tinuerlige fibre. Andre foretrukne fyllstoffer er asbest-fibre, klutepapir, syntetiske fibre, metallpulvere og lignende.
-Mengden forsterkningsfyllstoff ligger mellom 2 og 60 vekt%
av totalvekten. Helst er mengden forsterkningsmiddel 5 til 50 vekt% av totalsammensetningen.
For,å oppnå langtids-temperaturstabiliseringen i henhold til oppfinnelsen, tilsettes stabiliserende mengder av en kombinasjon av en polyamidpolymer, fenoxyharpiks og et organisk fosfonat til de forsterkende polypropylenterefthalat-eller polybutylen-terefthalat-støpeharpikser som beskrevet ovenfor. De tilsatte mengder av hvert tilsetningsstoff kan ligge mellom 0,01 og 10 vekt% av totalsammensetningens vekt, fortrinnsvis 0,1 til 2 vekt%.
Det lineære polyamid som tilsettes omfatter syntetiske lineære polyamider fremstilt av polyamid-monomere som monoaminocarboxylsyrer, deres amid-dannende derivater, eller ut fra egnede diaminer og dicarboxylsyrer eller amid-dannende derivater av disse forbindelser. De dannede polyamider har repeterende amidgrupper som bestanddel i polymer-kjeden og de repeterende intra-lineære carbonamidgrulper i disse polyamider er adskilt av hydrocarbongrupper med minst 2 carbonatomer. Syntetiske lineære polyamider som kan fremstilles i henhold til dette vil alle være av nylon-typen med relativ viskositet mellom 35 og 100, fortrinnsvis mellom 45 og 65,
målt i en oppløsning på 2 g polyamid i 21,8 g 90 %-ig maursyre-oppløsning.
Fremstilling av slike polymerer illustreres typisk
1. US patent nr. 2 071 200, 2 071 253, 2 130 948, 2 285 009 , 2. 361 Ili, 2 512 606, 3 193 535 og 3 431 236, og andre.
Særlige polyamider som kan fremstilles etter denne fremgangsmåte er blandt andre polyhexamethylenadipamid, polyhexamethylensebacamid, polymerisert 6-aminocapronsyre, polytetramethylenadipamid, polytetramethylensebacamid og polyadipamider fremstilt fra di-(4-aminpcyciohexyl)-ethan eller 1,6-di-(4-aminocyclohexyl)-hexan som diamin-komponent.
De foretrukne polyamider som benyttes i henhold til oppfinnelsen er: nylon 6, nylon 66, nylon 610, nylon 11 og nylon 12. Disse føres på markedet og fremgangsmåter for deres fremstilling beskrives i "Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, bind 10, s. 924 - 928, Interscience Publishers
Inc. New York C (1953). Andre polyamider som faller innenfor oppfinnelsens område er både slike laget av aminosyrer eller tilsvarendé alicykliske lactamer samt polymere laget av diamin-salter og tobasiske syrer. Det mest foretrukne poly-
amid er nylon 6, polymerisert caprolactam.
De anvendte fenoxyharpikser er høymolekylære termoplastiske harpikser fremstilt av 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyfenyl)-
propan og epiklorhydrin i henhold til fremgangsmåten beskrevet i. US patent 3 356 646 (1967). Den grunnleggende kjemiske opp-bygning for fenoxyharpikser er ekvivalent til epoxyharpiksene. Førstnevnte danner imidlertid en separat harpiksgruppe som
skiller seg fra epoxyharpikser på flere viktige områder:
1. Fenoxyharpiksene er seige og formbare termoplaster. Midlere.molvekt er 15 000 til 75 000, fortrinnsvis 20. 000 til 50 000, sammenlignet med 340 til 13 000 for vanlige erpoxyharpikser som tverrbinder ved poly-merisering . 2. Fenoxyharpiksene har ikke endeplasserte, høyreaktive epoxygrupper og er temoeraturstabile forbindelser med lang lagring-levetid. 3. Fenoxyharpikser kan benyttes uten videre kjemisk om-dannelse. De krever ingen katalysatorer eller herde
midler. for å være nyttige produkter mens epoxyharpikser krever katalysatorer eller herdemidler.
Fenoxyharpikser som kan benyttes i henhold til oppfinnelsen karakteriseres ved en repeterende enhet:
og har en midlere molvekt på.over 15 000 til 75 000. Ende-gruppene avsluttes med hydrogenatomer eller egnede endekappende grupper.
Typer av organiske fosfonater som kan benyttes ifølge oppfinnelsen beskrives i US patent 3 367 870. De har følgende formel:

De følgende forbindelser kan anvendes blandt andre:
Di-n-oc'tadecyl-3-t-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylbenzylf os f onat, di-n-octadecyl-1-(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxyfenyl)-ethanfosfonat, di-n-tetradecyl-3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzylfosfonat, di-n-hexadecyl-3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzylfosfonat,
di-n-docosyl-3,5-di-t-butyl-4<->hydroxybenzylfosfonat.
Den foretrukne stabilisator er di-n-octadecyl-3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzylfosfonat. •
Kombinasjonen av stabiliserende tilsetninger kan innføres i den forsterkede polyesterharpiks på en rekke måter:
(1) ved å tilsette stabilisatorene til forsterknings-
midlet før dette blandes med polyesterharpiksen,
(2). ved samtidig tilblanding til f orsterkningsmiddel og polyesterharpiks,
(3) ved blanding med den polymere fulgt av tilsetning
av forsterkningsmiddel, blandt andre metoder.
Andre additiver som brannhindrende midler og lig-
nende kan også tilsettes til den aktuelle•sammensetning.
De følgende eksempler skal illustrere harpikssammen-setningene av polypropylen- og polybutylen-terefthalatene ifølge oppfinnelsen. Eksemplene illustrerer bare oppfinnelsen og?! skal ikke oppfattes begrensende.
Eksempel 1
Polybutylenterefthalat (PBT) med egenviskositet på
Q,75 deciliter pr. gram i orthoklorfenol ved 25° C tomle-
blandes med 3 mm lange glassfiberarmering i tilstrekkelig mengde til at man får 30 % glass i den totale støpeblanding.
Etter tomleblandingen blir blandingen av glassfiber og 1,4-polybutylenterefthalat ekstruderingsblandet ved å tvinges gjennom en enkelskrueekstruder med standarddyse. Tempera-
turen i ekstruderen og dysen er 260 - 265° C. Glassfibrene
kuttes i en mølleblander slik at de går gjennom en større sikt (4 mesh eller mindre).
Polybutylenterefthalatpolymeren forsterket med fiberglass formes til prøvestenger av type I. Prøvestenger av type I for måling av strekkfastheten ble laget i en Stokes-skrue-sprøytestøpemaskin under følgende forhold:
Eksempel 2
En polybutylenterefthalatsmelte som inneholder 30 vekt% 3 mm glassfibre fremstilles som beskrevet i eksempel 1, Sammen med glassfibrene tilsettes imidlertid i dette tilfelle 0. 75 vekt%, basert på totalsammensetningen, nylon 6 (polycaprolactam med en relativ viskositet på 45) i pelletform. Tilsetningen av nylon-pellets skjer samtidig ved tilsetning
av glassfibre. Det er imidlertid en mulighet at nylonet kan tilsettes før eller etter tilsetningen av glassfibre. Satsen som inneholder 0,75 vekt% nylonpellets formes til- prøvestaver av type I som beskrevet i eksempel 1.
Eksempel 3
En blanding av polybutylenterefthalatharpiks som beskrevet i eksempel 2 fremstilles med unntak av at man i stedet for nylon 6 tilsetter en fenoxyharpiks som beskrevet tidligere, med midlere molvekt ca. 30 000 (1,25 vekt% av totalsammensetningen). til en sammensetning i henhold til eksempel 1, og lager prøvestaver for måling av strekkfasthet, av type I.
Eksempel 4
På lignende måte som i eksempel 3 ovenfor tilsettes 0/1 vekt% (totalbasis) di-n-octadecyl-3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzylfosfonat i stedet for fenoxyharpiks.
Eksempel 5
På lignende måte som i eksempel 3 tilsettes 0,75 vek.t% nylon 6 med relativ viskositet 45 og 1,25 vekt% fenoxyharpiks av den beskrevne type, med midlere molvekt 30 000 til sammensetningen ifølge eksempel 1, og man fremstiller prøve-stenger av type I.
Eksempel 6
På lignende måte som i eksempel 5 benytter man 0,1 vekt% di-n-octadecyl-3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzylfosfonat i stedet for nylon 6 som additiv.
Eksempel 7
På lignende måte som i eksempel 5 tilsettes en ytterligere mengde 0,1 vekt% di-n-octadecyl-3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzylfosfonat til nylonharpiksen og fenoxyharpiksen.
Man laget en rekke strekkfasthets-målestaver av type I av blandingene i eksempel 1-7. Strekkfastheten for prøvestengené ble målt før aldring i ovn hvor noen stenger ble aldret ved 185° C og noen ved 195° C. Strekkfasthets-målingen ble foretatt i henhold til ASTM D-638-68. Med mele lomrom ble fem stenger med hver av de ovenstående sammensetninger tatt ut av ovnen for måling av strekkfastheten. For eksempel ble strekkfasthetsprøver foretatt med stenger aldret ved 185° C med mellomromene 1 uke, 2 uker, 3 uker, 5 uker, uker, 11 uker, 15 uker og 21 uker og prøver aldret ved 195° C med mellomrommene 2 dager-, 4 dager, 8 dager, 2 uker, 3 uker, 5 uker, 6 uker, 8 uker og 10 uker.
Strekkfastheten for hver av prøvestavene over for-søksperioden ble avsatt på en kurve som angir strekkfasthet mot tid, for å finne det tidsrom hvorunder strekkfastheten for hvert stavstrekksett ble redusert med 50 % av den opprinnelige strekkf asthet. Dette angir F,. Q-verdien. Disse tall er en fremragende indikasjon på langtids-stabiliteten for de forskjellige polyalkylenterefthalater overfor varme-påkjenning. Resultatene er oppført i tabell I og. II.
Kombinasjonen av fenoxyharpiks, nylon 6 og organisk fosfonat■sammen med 30 % glassforsterket PBT er helt overlegen med hensyn på langtids-aldring i forhold til andre kombinasjoner av de ovenfor beskrevne tilsetninger.

185° C, vil man se at den nødvendige tid for reduksjon avStrekkfastheten hos prøvestengene til 50 % av. den opprinnelige verdi er vesentlig lenger for additivkombinasjonen: fenoxyharpiks, nylon 6 og organisk fosfonat i glassfiberforsterket polybutylenterefthalat (4032 timer) enn for noen individuelle eller andre kombinasjoner vist ovenfor. Langtids-temperatur-bestandigheten hos sammensetninger ifølge oppfinnelsen er derfor fremragende.
Man vil se av tabell II at resultatet av forsøk med
■prøvestaver ved 195° C gir samme konklusjon som for tabell I med hensyn på kombinasjonene av fenoxyharpiks, nylon 6-harpiks og organisk fosfonat.
Man får lignende resultater hvis det benyttes poly-propylenteref thalatpolymer i stedet for polybutylentereftha-latpolymer i eksemplene ovenfor.
Claims (6)
1. Støpeplast inneholdende forsterkende fyllstoff og polyalkylen-terefthalat valgt blandt polypropylenterefthalat og p-lybutylenterefthalat med egenviskositet 0,4 til 1,2 desiliter pr. gram målt som 8 vekt% oppløsning, basert på polymervekten, av orthoklorfenol ved 25° (^ karakterisert ved at støpeharpiksen er tilsatt en kombinasjon av stabiliserende mengder av
(a) ', et lineært polyamid med relativ viskositet 35 til 100,
(b) en termoplastisk fenoxyharpiks med repeterende enhet:
og en midlere molvekt i området 15 000 til 75 000, (c). et organisk f osf onat med formelen:
hvor n er 0 eller 1, og
(a) , når n er lik,
R og R-L betegner alkyl med 12 - 24 carbonatomer, og R2 og R^ betegner alkyl med 1-6 carbonatomer og R4 betegner hydrogen og-(b) når n er lik 0, R2 , OH og R3 er bundet respektivt til 3-, 4- og 5-stil-lingene på benzenringen i benzylfosfonatet,
R og R-^ betegner alkyl med 14 - 30 carbonatomer,
R2 betegner alkyl med 1-6 carbonatomer,
R^ betegner t-butyl og
R4 betegner hydrogen eller methyl.
2. Sammensetning som angitt i krav 1, karakterisert ved at kombinasjonen av nevnte stabiliserende mengder utgjør 0,01 til 10 vekt% av den totale støpeblanding og at mengden forsterkende fyllstoff er 2 - 60 vekt% av den totale støpeblanding.
3. Sammensetning ifølge krav 2, karakterisert ved at kombinasjonen av stabiliseringsmiddel utgjør 0,1 - 2 vekt% av den totale støpesammensetning, det forsterkende fyllstoff er glassfibre og egenviskositeten for poly-alkylenteref.thalatet er 0,5 - 1,0 desiliter pr. gram.
4. Sammensetning som angitt i krav 3, karakterisert ved at den lineære polyamid er polycaprolactam (nylon 6) med relativ viskositet ca. 45-65.
5. Sammensetning som angitt i krav 4, karakterisert ved at fenoxyharpiksen har en midlere molvekt på 20 000 - 50 000. '
6. Sammenstning som angitt i krav 5, karakterisert ved at det organiske fosfonat er di-n-octadecyl-3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzylfosfonat.
