Description
The invention relates to an explosive charge for a warhead which, next to the ignition chain for detonating initiation of the explosive charge, has another ignition chain for deflagrative initiation.
The field of action for today's warheads is increasingly changing. Targets are increasingly being selected in urban areas to weaken the adversary's infrastructure. These targets are characterized by extreme local proximity to civilians and other facilities that should not be damaged or only slightly damaged. As the selected directions of action of a warhead are given in advance through the construction, the impact of the effect of the warhead is only as an opportunity to reduce the damage in the surroundings of the target.
It is also known to reduce the effect of a warhead in a controlled manner in that the detonating initiation is counteracted by a deflagrative initiation. Thereby, the effect in relation to the previously unchanged designs of the explosive charge in the warhead can be set between 0 and 100%.
It is the purpose of the invention to support the optional detonating or deflagrative initiation of the explosive charge by means of the design of the explosive charge and to allow the initiation to proceed more reliably.
This purpose is achieved in a simple way through the characteristic stated in claim 1. Advantageous designs of the invention are described in the independent claims.
With the shape of the explosive charge for a warhead according to the invention, various advantages are achieved. Through the appropriate selection of detonating or deflagratively exchangeable explosives and also inert materials for the various layers, the purposefully initiated deflagration proceeds in a controlled manner and the probability of the transition from a deflagration to a detonation is suppressed as much as possible.
Here figure la shows a section through an explosive charge with alternating different layers, figure lb shows the course of the converted effect depending on the course length, figure 2 shows an alternative to the solution shown in figure la, figure 3 shows an explosive charge with aperture-like barriers, figure 4 is a diagram to show how the radius of curvature (or inlet length) R relates to the initiation pressure P.
Figure la shows a greatly simplified example of the invention, a section through the explosive charge of a warhead. The explosive charge has a layer-like structure, so that each of the layers 3a, ..., 3d of detonating exchangeable explosive alternates with other layers 4a, ..., 4c of only deflagrative exchangeable explosive. Within the scope of the invention, detonating exchangeable explosive means a high-energy (explosive) explosive that is easy to initiate, while the deflagrative exchangeable explosive consists of a less energetic explosive that is more difficult to initiate. Within the framework of the invention, it is absolutely possible in the explosive layers 3a, ..., 3d to use explosives with different explosiveness and sensitivity. As a second alternative, there is instead one or more other layers 4a, ... 4c, also assuming the use of inert layers. These damping layers then consist of plastic, metals or sandwich layers of these materials. PU foam can be used just as well as cushioning material. Furthermore, within the scope of the invention, it is possible to use or combine in an explosive charge both deflagratively exchangeable and also inert layers.
The initiation of deflagrative or detonating reaction takes place preferably from each end of the explosive charge. Ignition chain 1 on the left side is provided for the deflagrative release, while ignition chain 2 on the right side serves for the detonating initiation.
The principle of the explosives in layers or the alternating layers of explosive and inert material result in an unwanted transition within a detonating exchangeable explosive layer from a deflagration to a detonation in the subsequent insensitive layer again reverting to a deflagration. The prerequisite for this, that ignition chain 1 for the deflagrative initiation brings to use a lower energy level (stimulus) on the following explosive layer 3a than the second ignition chain 2 which, due to its high stimulus, immediately initiates the detonating explosive layer 3d which is easier to initiate.
In Figure 1b, in the lower half of the drawing, from left to right, the course corresponding to a deflagrative release by means of ignition chain 1 for the pressure level PL (reaction level) in the successive layers over the length L of the explosive charge is drawn up. After the release of the ignition chain 1 (curve ZK1), the pressure is initially at a relatively low level. Then there is a rise in the detonating exchangeable layer and further in the deflagrative exchangeable or inert layer again a fall to approximately the starting level. Due to the sawtooth-shaped course, the pressure level P corresponding to Figure 4 remains within a bandwidth around the value PL which can be predetermined by means of the dimensioning of the layers, and does not escalate to an unwanted detonation. In the upper half of figure lb, from left to right, the pressure level P is reached by a detonating initiation by means of the ignition chain 2 (curve ZK2) which is drawn up over the length L of the explosive charge. Here, within the detonating exchangeable layer 3d, a constant high level of reaction is evident, which clearly decreases when the detonation front enters the deflagratively exchangeable i.e. inert layer 4c. However, when the next detonating exchangeable layer 3c is reached, the pressure level has not yet dropped to a value clearly below the pressure mark PH which would only allow a deflagrative initiation of the following detonating exchangeable layer 3c. Therefore, the reaction level in layer 3c rises rapidly to the value of the detonation pressure already achieved in layer 3d, which is held until the next deflagratively negotiable i.e. inert layer 4b.
On the detonating input side of the explosive charge, a high stimulus for the further ignition chain 2 is applied to an easily initiated explosive layer 3d. Thus, a self-sustaining detonation proceeds, which, despite the intermediate damping layers, propagates to an overall clearly higher pressure level.
Figure 2 shows another solution as a supplement to figure la. Here, the deflagrative initiation takes place by means of the ignition chain 1 on an explosive charge layer 5 with lower explosiveness, so that only a deflagrative reaction is initiated. The further layer structure corresponds to Figure 1a with alternating explosive layers 3a, ..., 3d which can be converted detonatingly and explosive layers 4a, ..., 4c which can be converted deflagratively or damping layer. Thereby, also in this case, the pressure level is within a smaller bandwidth according to Figure 1b. The detonating release takes place again over the second ignition chain 2 to the explosive layer 3d with high explosiveness.
Within the framework of the present invention, it cannot also be ruled out to use combinations of explosive charges built up in layers as explained with the help of the examples.
Figure 3 shows an alternative to the design examples shown so far. The deflagrative initiation takes place over the ignition chain 1 with a lower stimulus on the explosive 3 with high explosiveness. To dampen the pressure level that develops, mechanical damping layers 4a, ..., 4d are provided. As a kind of barrier, these extend only over part of the cross-section of the explosive charge 3. As materials, sandwich connection layers of plastic and metal can also be used for the damping layers next to PU foam or plastic sheets. Succeeding damping layers are arranged so that, like a kind of labyrinth, they cover each other alternately in the direction of travel of the detonation wave. Thereby, the detonation front extends in arcs with radius R beyond the barrier-like damping layers 4a, ..., 4d. But the detonation front cannot move around the barriers at any radii R (cf. Figure 4). Below a minimum value depending on each type of explosive, the propagation of the detonation is suppressed. Above this value, the desired attenuation of the energy level takes place at a level where, on average, a deflagrative turnover of all the explosive material takes place. But if the explosive charge 3 of the second ignition chain 2 is initiated detonatingly with a higher stimulus, then the detonation creates shock waves with an amplitude that cannot be reduced so much by the mechanical damping layers 4a, ..., 4d that the passage of the detonation wave could be prevented. The detonation proceeds unimpeded. Furthermore, the radii of curvature for the detonation (R < RH see Figure 4) are so small that the detonation can run around the barriers.
The diagram in Figure 4 shows the physical relationship between the curvature ratio of explosive detonation waves in the non-linear dependence on the initiation pressure (or stimulus). In this way, a running detonation wave with only a small pressure PL or small stimulus just run around large radii R = RL according to Figure 3 without risk of dying out. The higher the initiation pressure P or the stimulus rises, the smaller radii R can be run around.
Tilløpsstrekningen for dette er LH- A similar relationship also appears when, instead of the radius of curvature R, the running length L according to Figure 1b (lower half) is considered. The running distance 1 (cf. Figure 1b) between two barriers 4b, 4c must, on the one hand, be clearly smaller than the value LL, so that at the initiation pressure PL for the ignition chain ZK1 with a lower stimulus there is no approach to detonation. The access route for this is LL. On the other side, the stretch 1 must be somewhat greater than the value LH, so that at the higher initiation pressure PH for the directly opposite ignition chain ZK2, a safe detonation occurs. The access route for this is LH-
