Description
The present invention relates to a child's car seat of the type which is arranged to be placed facing backwards in a car and which includes a rigid outer shell with an inner padding of a shock-absorbing, i.e. energy-absorbing, material.
Child car seats of the type in question, which are primarily intended for small children up to 2 to 3 years of age, have been shown to provide good collision protection, except when it comes to side collisions. In such cases, even children in car seats are not subject to major injuries.
US 3 910 634, US 4 348 049, Car seats with various forms of head protection or screens are known from US 3 910 634, US 4 348 049,
US 4 655 506, EP 545 185 og WO 91/19623. US 4,655,506, EP 545,185 and WO 91/19623.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide an improved child car seat of the type mentioned at the outset, where the side impact protection is significantly better.
This purpose is achieved by the child car seat according to the invention having the features stated in the patent claims.
The child car seat is thus characterized by the fact that it preferably has an internal frame which stiffens the chair and counteracts compression and internal deformations in the chair in the event of a side collision and that it has a normal inverted bowl-shaped protection for the head of the child who is placed in the chair, which protection is permanently arranged on the chair and includes an outer rigid shell attached to the chair's outer shell and/or frame and is provided with an internal padding of a shock-absorbing material, the head protection being designed as a head-enclosing, oversized protective helmet with such a depth that the child's head essentially does not visible from the side, as well as in the event of a side collision, to restrain the child's head inside the protection and prevent the child's head from rotating or swinging out of the chair. To achieve this purpose, it is advantageous that the enveloping head protection's padding at the front has a bead at the opening which, in the event of a side collision, guides the child's head into the head protection, as the child's head in strong collisions after all tends to rotate or swing out of the head protection.
According to the invention, it is further advantageous that the rigid outer shell on the respective sides of the chair has an energy-absorbing area, preferably in connection with the position of the child's center of gravity. An area of this type dampens the high initial impulse in the event of a side collision and helps to give a favorable start to the chair's acceleration course.
The inner frame preferably forms a closed cage, which encloses significant parts of the child sitting in the chair. The frame may include a front transverse frame element and side frame elements emanating from it which extend backwards and upwards and which are preferably connected to each other at the rear via an arc-shaped frame element.
Further advantageous features of the child car seat according to the invention are stated in the independent claims.
The car seat according to the invention has been shown to provide a number of advantages.
The head-enclosing superstructure that the helmet-like head protection constitutes provides very good protection against head and neck injuries in side collisions, especially in combination with the other characteristics that are important for providing the most favorable lateral acceleration and the small seat part formation.
It has thus been shown that the combination of rigid areas, energy-absorbing areas and areas that prevent movement means that the child in the car seat is moved as gently as possible. The child and car seat are essentially moved as a unit in the lateral direction, which is accelerated upwards as gently as possible.
The extra frame distributes the load on the chair and causes less deformation and thus less damage to the child. Not least this applies to the sensitive hip area. It is realized that better distributed load also means that the shock-absorbing material is utilized in a better way.
Finally, it is realized that the head protection which encloses the head, also on the sides and top and which resembles a deep oversized protective helmet fixed to the seat, also functions as protection against splinters, protection when the car rolls around and protection from the sun.
The invention will subsequently be described further by means of an embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The accompanying drawings show the general structure of an embodiment of a car seat according to the invention.
The embodiment of the child car seat according to the invention shown in the drawing includes an outer shell 1 of rigid hard plastic, a shell padding 3 of a shock-absorbing material such as styrofoam, an additional inner frame 5 between the outer shell and the padding and a head protection 7.
The outer shell 1 and the padding 3 have a substantially known basic design such as corresponding to our own approved car seat MINI, which is referred to regarding details in this connection.
The frame 5 is made of steel tubes and consists of a front transverse tube element 9, where side frame elements 10 extend from each side end of the element (only one is shown in the drawing), mainly parallel backwards approximately to the angled transition between the seat part of the chair and the back support part. The frame elements continue backwards-upwards - and slightly inwards and are connected to each other via an arc-shaped frame element 11 which is connected to the back support part 13 of the outer shell 1, which has integrated stiffening elements 15. The frame is designed in one piece and thereby forms a mainly rectangular design, albeit somewhat tapering at the back. At the front, the frame at the sides is provided with protruding attachment parts 17, 18 which can be used for securing the chair in a car.
The side parts of the outer shell 1 have energy-absorbing areas 21 which can be integrated into the shell itself, or can be made up of a specially applied material. These areas 21 include at least the middle area where the chair is angled and where the hip area of a child 23, placed in the chair, is located.
The head protection 7 includes a rigid outer plastic shell 25 which mainly has a hoop shape with a relatively wide (seen in the direction of travel) top part and on each side of it downwards, tapering side parts whose respective end 27 is attached to the outer shell 1 (at 29). The rear edge of the shell 25 is connected to the top part of the outer shell 1.
The head protection has a padding of shock-absorbing material including a neck or back part 31 and a front or upper part 33, both with forward and downward protruding parts, so that together they form an essentially completely enveloping padding around the child's head. The depth of the head protection is such that the child's head is essentially not visible from the side.
The front edge of the upper part 33 is designed as a bead 35 facing the opening of the head protection, which helps to keep the child's head in place in the head protection.
It is realized that even if there is a free space around the child's head inside the head protection, this free space is significantly reduced, compared to the free side space available for the child's head in conventional child car seats, which also have no space limitation whatsoever above the child's head with with the exception of some common simple sun protection shades.
In the embodiment shown, the car seat is adapted to be fixed in the car by means of the frame elements 17, 18, which help to provide additional stability. In an alternative embodiment, the frame elements 9, 17 and 18 can be replaced by a strong cross-bar element, in particular a thicker tube, which connects the front end of the side frame elements 10. The side ends of the cross member can be used to hold the car seat with advantage in such a way that in connection with a side collision the seat can very early start to shift laterally in relation to the car seat or the car seat where the car seat is installed. This provides an improved acceleration course, while at the same time the stiffened chair's general movement pattern is influenced in a favorable direction.
It should be mentioned that the head protection of the described type can of course also be advantageously fitted to child car seats which lack the described additional frame, although the combined advantages described are not achieved. The head protection can therefore take the form of an addition that is attached to an existing car seat, for example by using the available sun protection attachments and/or form locking against the top part of the outer shell.
Finally, it must be stated that a head protection of this type can include an outer shell which forms an integral part of the car seat's outer shell.
