Abstract

A process for increasing the cetane number of a diesel fuel mixture containing a greater proportion of a diesel-based fuel to achieve a desired cetane number X. The process is characterized in that a quantity x of a fatty acid alkyl ester (FAAE) having a cetane number is added to the base fuel. B which is higher than the cetane number A of the base fuel, where x is lower than the amount of FAAE additive that it would be necessary to add to the base fuel to obtain a cetane number X if linear mixing rules were in force, and the concentration of FAAE in it the total fuel mixture is from 0.05 to 25% by volume, and the derived cetane number (IP 498/03) for the diesel fuel mixture. as a result of the use of the FAAE additive in the mixture, is 50 or higher. Use of an FAAE additive in a diesel fuel blend for the purpose of reducing the amount of cetane enhancing additives in the blend.
