Abstract

En celle for elektrolytisk utvinning av et metall, særlig aluminium, fra en forbindelse av dette som er oppløst i en elektrolytt (30) omfatter en anode (40) og katode (10, 11) som har kontakt med elektrolytten (30), hvor katoden (10, 11) under bruk er ved et katodisk potensiale for på denne å redusere stoffer av metallet som skal produseres fra den oppløste forbindelse. Elektrolytten (30) inneholder videre stoffer av minst ett element som er tilbøyelig til å kontaminere produktmetallet (20), og som har et katodisk reduksjonspotensiale som er mindre negativt enn det katodiske potensialet for metaller som skal produseres. Cellen omfatter videre en vektor (50) for fjerning av stoffer av ett eller flere slike elementer fra elektrolytten (30). Under bruk er kollektoren (50) ved et potensiale som er: mindre negativt enn det katodiske potensialet for det produserte metall (20), for å inhibere reduksjon derpå av stoffer av metallet som skal produseres; og ved eller mer negativt enn reduksjonspotensialet for stoffene av elementet/elementene, for å muliggjøre reduksjon av disse på kollektoren (50). Cellen er slik anordnet at stoffer av elementet/elementene reduseres på kollektoren (50) istedenfor på katoden (10, 11), for å inhibere kontaminasjon av produktmetallet (20) med elementet/elementene.
