Description
The present invention relates to thermoplastic preparations and more particularly to thermoplastic elastomer preparations comprising mixtures of ethylene/acrylate copolymer and polynorbornene.
The invention also relates to a method for producing these thermoplastic preparations.
Polymers with a relatively high molecular weight are generally incompatible with each other. When two polymers of different types are mixed, the mixture generally has poorer mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation at break. A pair of polymers is rarely sufficiently compatible to be able to form a mixture with mechanical properties as good as those of the weaker of the two. However, when two polymers are compatible, the resulting mixture can exhibit an advantageous combination of properties, that is to say that in addition to having good mechanical properties, they can also have other favorable properties.
Thus, US-A-4 203 884 describes that preparations comprising the mixture of a thermoplastic crystalline polyolefin, of the polynorbornene and of an amount of plasticizer for the polynorbornene sufficient to reduce the glass transition temperature of the rubber region have advantageous properties. More particularly, this document describes compositions comprising a mixture of 75 to 10 parts by weight polyolefin, 25 to 90 parts by weight polynorbornene and, per 100 parts by weight of norbornene, 30 to 400 parts by weight of plasticiser, as the preparations are elastoplastic, that is to say they have elastomeric properties, while they are processable as thermoplastics. In the molten state, according to this technique, part of the plasticizer may be present in the thermoplastic polyolefin phase. After cooling, the plasticizer essentially migrates from the crystalline polyolefin phase towards the polynorbornene phase to form part of it. In this way, the plasticizer improves the thermoplasticity or workability of the preparation. As a general rule and for a given degree of thermoplasticity, the preparation requires proportionally less polyolefin the higher the amount of plasticizer.
US-A-4 203 884 also discloses compositions comprising a mixture of 10 to 90% by weight crystalline polyolefin and 90 to 10% by weight crosslinked polynorbornene dispersed in the form of small size particles and of plasticizer in an amount sufficient to reduce the glass transition temperature for the polynorbornene to the rubber region. Thus, the cross-linking of the polynorbornene improves the property compromise in the preparation, and the high-temperature properties. Such preparations are obtained by a dynamic vulcanization process according to which a mixture of polynorbornene, plasticizer, polyolefin and crosslinking agent is kneaded at a sufficient temperature to crosslink the polynorbornene.
Among the thermoplastic crystalline polyolefins that can be used according to US-PS 4,203,884 should be mentioned polyethylene and polypropylene, the latter being preferred as confirmed by the comparison of the results as shown in tables 1 and 2 of the patent. Thus, this document describes that preparations comprising from 30 to 60 parts by weight of cross-linked polynorbornene and from 70 to 40 parts by weight of a polyethylene with a density equal to 0.960 g/cm<5> have: a modulus at 100% elongation of at least 6.8 MPa, the will say
for høy, og too high, and
en forlengelse til brudd som ikke går ut over 220%, det vil si for lave for de fleste anvendelser for termoplastiske elastomerer. an elongation to break that does not exceed 220%, i.e. too low for most applications for thermoplastic elastomers.
It has now been further shown that these same preparations have a residual compression set that is too high and a Shore-A hardness that is too high for the vast majority of applications for thermoplastic elastomers.
The problem the present invention aims to solve is therefore, among the infinite number of ethylene polymers, to select a polymer which is able to contribute to an advantageous property compromise for an elastomer preparation based on the polynorbornene and plasticizer, and which makes it suitable for main -the number of applications for thermoplastic elastomers and in particular:
en Shore-Å-hårdhet på ikke over 65, a Shore-Å hardness of not more than 65,
en forlengelse til brudd som ikke er mindre enn 230%, an elongation to break of not less than 230%,
en modul ved 100% forlengelse som ikke er høyere enn 6 MPa a modulus at 100% elongation not higher than 6 MPa
og fortrinnsvis ikke høyere enn 3 MPa, og and preferably not higher than 3 MPa, and
en gjenværende kompresjonsdeformasjon (målt ved 70°C og a residual compression deformation (measured at 70°C and
etter 22 timer) som ikke overskrider 47%. after 22 hours) which does not exceed 47%.
In this connection, it has been shown that this goal can be achieved by resorting to an ethylene/acrylate copolymer.
More particularly, the object of the present invention is a preparation comprising a mixture of 20 to 70 parts by weight of polynorbornene, 80 to 30 parts by weight of an olefin-based crystalline polymer and an amount of plasticizer for the polynorbornene which is sufficient to reduce the glass transition temperature of the rubber region, and the preparation is characterized in that it olefin-based crystalline polymer selected is a polymer or a mixture of polymers comprising: from 5 to 100% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene and at least one C 1 -g alkyl acrylate whereby the copolymer has a melt index
mellom 0,1 og 20 dg/min., og between 0.1 and 20 dg/min., and
fra 0 til 95 vekt-% av en kopolymer av etylen og minst et C3-^Q-a-olefin, idet kopolymeren har en relativ densitet på mellom 0,89 og 0,93, en krystallinitet på mellom 15 og 50% og en smelteindeks mellom 0,5 og 15 dg/min. from 0 to 95% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene and at least one C3-^Q-a-olefin, the copolymer having a relative density of between 0.89 and 0.93, a crystallinity of between 15 and 50% and a melt index between 0.5 and 15 dg/min.
The ethylene/acrylate copolymers which form part of the mixture of the crystalline polyolefin are well known to those skilled in the art and can be prepared in various ways, especially at high pressure and elevated temperature. They preferably contain from 0.5 to 10 mol% of units derived from the acrylate. Among the acrylates which may form part of the structure of these copolymers, particular reference must be made to methyl, ethyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, tert-butyl and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates.
A polynorbornene within the scope of the invention means an amorphous polymer or copolymer of bicyclo[2,2,1]-2-heptene and substituted derivatives thereof as described in US-A-3 676 390. Among plasticizers for the polynorbornene which can reduce the glass formation temperature to in the rubber area, mention may be made of the petroleum-derived heavy aromatic, naphthenic and paraffinic oils with a freezing point below 0°C and a flash point above 180°C, and phthalic acid diesters such as dioctyl or didodecyl phthalates. These plasticizers can be used pure or mixed.
The ethylene/α-olefin copolymers which are present in the preparation according to the invention are well known to those skilled in the art and can be produced by various processes, either at low pressure and moderate temperature or at high pressure and elevated temperature. Corresponding to the density range shown, the molar content of cx-olefin is generally between 1 and 10%, depending on the nature of cx-olefin. Among the α-olefins which may form part of the structure of these copolymers, propylene, 1-butene, 1-hexene, 4-methyl-1-pentene and 1-octene should be mentioned in particular. Among the ethylene/α-olefin copolymers that can be used according to the invention are the particularly preferred ethylene/propylene/1-butene terpolymers and copolymers of ethylene and of higher α-olefins (that is, those containing at least 4 carbon atoms) according to EP -A 070 220. The latter are copolymers with particularly pronounced macromolecular heterogeneity, i.e. those where the α-olefin content can deviate markedly from, depending on the crystalline or amorphous fractions that are measured, the average α-olefin content in the copolymer. In some copolymers of this type, the heterogeneity can be such that the α-olefin content in a crystalline fraction is 1/10 of the average content and that the α-olefin content in the amorphous fraction is up to five times the average content. Furthermore, such heterogeneous copolymers are preferably such that their crystalline fractions exhibit a single melting point peak at a temperature between 116 and 130°C. Among the other preferred characteristics should be mentioned: a total unsaturation content of between 0.25 and 0.50

en polydispersitetsindeks mellom 3 og 9 når kopolymeren kun inneholder et a-olefin, mellom 6 og 12 når kopolymeren a polydispersity index between 3 and 9 when the copolymer contains only an α-olefin, between 6 and 12 when the copolymer
inneholder minst to a-olefiner; contains at least two α-olefins;
en tallmidlere molekylvekt Mnpå mellom 12 000 og 60 000. a number average molecular weight Mn of between 12,000 and 60,000.
The second object of the invention is therefore a thermoplastic preparation comprising a mixture of 20 to 70 parts by weight of crosslinked polynorbornene, 80 to 30 parts by weight of an olefin-based crystalline polymer and an amount of plasticizer for the polynorbornene sufficient to reduce the glass formation temperature of the rubber area, and this preparation is characterized by the olefin-based crystalline polymer is a polymer selected from
fra 5 til 100 vekt-% av en kopolymer av etylen og minst et C^-g-alkylakrylat hvorved kopolymeren har en smelteindeks from 5 to 100% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene and at least one C 1 -g alkyl acrylate whereby the copolymer has a melt index
mellom 0,1 og 20 dg/min., og between 0.1 and 20 dg/min., and
fra 0 til 95 vekt-% av en kopolymer av etylen og minst et c3"10_cx_o-'-e^in' ide_t kopolymeren har en relativ densitet på mellom 0,89 og 0,93, en krystallinitet på mellom 15 og 50% og en smelteindeks mellom 0,5 og 15 dg/min. from 0 to 95% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene and at least one c3"10_cx_o-'-e^in' ide_t the copolymer has a relative density of between 0.89 and 0.93, a crystallinity of between 15 and 50% and a melting index between 0.5 and 15 dg/min.
As mentioned in the introduction, the invention also relates to a method for producing these thermoplastic preparations and this method is characterized by the fact that a mixture of polynorbornene, plasticizer, ethylene/acrylate copolymer, cross-linking system and possibly ethylene/α-olefin copolymer is kneaded at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient period of time to crosslink the polynorbornene.
The ethylene/α-olefin copolymer and the ethylene/alkyl acrylate copolymer which are present in the thermoplastic preparation according to the invention have already been described in detail above when talking about preparations containing a non-crosslinked polynorbornene. In the thermoplastic mixtures according to the invention, the cross-linked softened polynorbornene is preferably in the form of dispersed small particles which allow the preparation to be converted and processed like any other thermoplastic material.
In general, the crosslinking systems which are suitable for vulcanization of diene rubber can be used for crosslinking the polynorbornene in the thermoplastic preparations according to the invention. Among the satisfactory cross-linking agents for rubbers should be mentioned vulcanizing agents based on sulphur, peroxide, phenolic resin, azo, maleimido, quinoid and urethane compounds such as free sulfur or sulphur-releasing compounds such as tetramethylthiuram disulphide, thiuram disulphide, benzothiazyl disulphide and dipenta-methylenethiuram hexasulphide or m-phenylene bismaleimide, benzoquinone dioxime, lead peroxide, di-orthotolylguanidine, 4,4'-dithiodimorpholin and the like. These vulcanizing agents can advantageously be used in combination with at least one vulcanization activator or accelerator such as zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, benzothiazole sulfamide, stannous chloride, zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate, zinc phenylethyldithiocarbamate, tellurium methyldithiocarbamate compounds and the like. When free sulfur or a sulfur-releasing compound is used as vulcanizing agent, it is preferable to use a large amount of vulcanization activator or accelerator, that is, a weight amount of activator or accelerator that is approximately between one and three times the weight of the vulcanizing agent.
The components of the cross-linking system, and especially the vulcanizing agent, are used in the usual proportions that are well-known to those skilled in the art in order to thereby achieve a so-called total cross-linking of the polynorbornene without thereby reducing the elasticity to a point where the compound is no longer rubbery. In the thermoplastic preparations according to the invention, the polynorbornene is preferably cross-linked to the point where no more than 10% and preferably no more than approx. 5% of the polynorbornene can be extracted with a solvent such as boiling xylene, in which the uncrosslinked polynorbornene is totally soluble, as are the ethylene/α-olefin copolymer and the ethylene/alkyl acrylate copolymer. These extraction tests make it possible to continuously examine whether the ethylene/acrylate copolymer and, possibly, the ethylene/α-olefin copolymer itself is sufficiently cross-linked, which has a significant impact on the thermoplasticity of the preparation.
For certain applications of the preparations according to the invention, their tensile strength and/or oil resistance can be improved without simultaneously renouncing the favorable compromise of properties as described above by partially replacing the ethylene/α-olefin copolymer with an essentially propylene-based crystalline polymer. According to this alternative form of the invention, up to 60% by weight and preferably up to 40% by weight of the ethylene/α-olefin copolymer can be replaced by a polymer with a melt index of between 0.3 and 3 dg/min.
(determined according to ASTM standard D 1238 at 230° C under 2.16 kg), containing at least 80 mol-% propylene-derived units and not more than 20 mol-% units derived from a comonomer selected from ethylene and C^j-^ -α-olefins. The polymer is crystalline in nature and is preferably isotactic when it consists only of units derived from propylene.
Finally, for applications where high ozone and/or thermal aging resistance is sought, the compositions according to the invention may comprise an olefinic elastomer, the latter being a partial replacement for the polynorbornene so that it can replace up to 1/3 of the weight of the polynorbornene which is present. As an olefinic elastomer that can be used in the preparations according to the invention, an ethylene terpolymer with at least one C3-5~a-olefin and at least one diene must be mentioned in particular. More particularly, ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymers are preferred, the diene being selected from conjugated or non-conjugated linear or cyclic dienes such as butadiene, isoprene, 1,3-pentadiene, 1,4-pentadiene, 1,4-hexadiene, 1,5-hexadiene, 1,9-decadiene, 5-methylene-2-norbornene, 5-vinyl-2-norbornene, 2-alkyl-2,5-norbornadienes, 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene, 5-(2 -propenyl )-2-norbornene , 5-( 5-hexenyl ).-2-norbornene, 1,5-cyclooctadiene, bicyclo[2,2,2]-2,5-octadiene, cyclopentadiene, 4,7, 8,9-tetrahydroindene and isopropylidenetetrahydroindene. Such elastomeric terpolymers that can be used according to the invention generally comprise between approx. 15 and 60 mol% propylene-derived units and about 0.1 to 20 mol% units derived from the diene.
The properties of the preparations according to the invention can preferably be modified to achieve special applications, by adding conventional ingredients such as:
hvitt (TiOg) eller farvede pigmenter, white (TiOg) or colored pigments,
koblingsmidler som silaner eller titanater, nedbrytningsinhibitorer som for eksempel sinksaltet av coupling agents such as silanes or titanates, degradation inhibitors such as the zinc salt of
merkaptobenzimidazol, mercaptobenzimidazole,
stabilisatorer som for eksempel polymerisert 2,2,4-trimetyl-1,2-dihydrokinolin, stabilizers such as polymerized 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline,
bearbeidingshjelpemidler som langkjede-alifatiske aminer, processing aids such as long-chain aliphatic amines,
stearinsyresalter og lignende, stearic acid salts and the like,
pulverformige fyllstoffer som sot, silika, kaolin, powdered fillers such as carbon black, silica, kaolin,
alumina, leire, aluminosilikat, talkum, karbonat og smøremidler som stearinsyre. alumina, clay, aluminosilicate, talc, carbonate and lubricants such as stearic acid.
In particular, the addition of powdered fillers has the effect of improving the tensile strength and in some cases the elongation to break for the thermoplastic preparations according to the invention. The amount of filler that can be incorporated into the preparation can go up to 150 parts per 100 parts by weight of polynorbornene, as this quantity can of course vary depending on the type of filler.
The thermoplastic preparations according to the invention in which the polynorbornene is crosslinked are preferably produced by dynamic vulcanization, i.e. by kneading a mixture of the polynorbornene, plasticizer, ethylene/acrylate copolymer, crosslinking system (as defined above) and, where appropriate, ethylene/α-olefin copolymer at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient time to crosslink the polynorbornene. The kneading can be carried out in a conventional apparatus such as a Banbury mixer, a Brabender mixer, a Rheocord mixer or an extruder, at a temperature of between 110° C and 220° C for a period of between 3 and 15 minutes, as this time is proportionally shorter the higher the temperature. Before this kneading step, the mixture can be pre-homogenized in an internal mixer at a moderate temperature of between 60°C and 120°C.
The preparations according to the invention can be used for the production of finished products and industrial objects using extrusion, injection molding and compression molding.
In particular, they can be extruded on extruders of the same type as those usually used for polyolefins, i.e. those having a screw length:diameter ratio which is generally between 18 and 28 and a compression ratio which is preferably close to 3.0. The temperature profile shown along the screw is generally rather flat, the temperature difference between inlet and nozzle is approx. 10 to 20°C. The temperature of the preparation in the extruder (storage temperature) can be between approx. 150 and 220°C and preferably between 160 and 180°C. These extruders are equipped with profile nozzles (for example industrial or furniture profiles). The extrusion speed is between approx. 15 and 50 m/min. and the extrudate undergoes practically no drawing at the outlet; it is cooled in a water bath and passed over a drawing bench whose speed is generally between 100 and 110% of the extrusion speed.
The preparations according to the invention can also be injection molded using injection presses of the same type as those usually used for high- and low-density polyethylene and polypropylene. The temperature of the material in the press, which is a function of the proportion of plasticizer in the preparation, is generally between 120 and 200"C. This temperature is proportionally lower the higher the proportion of plasticizer. It is generally appropriate to use an injection pressure that is markedly higher than the working pressure in order to thereby increase the fluidity of the reservoir during the injection. As an example, it will be possible to use an injection pressure of 700 bar when the working pressure is 150 bar. The speed of the softening screw can generally go up to 100 to 200 rpm. Depending on the desired injection speed, the mold temperature can conveniently be chosen between -10 and +40°C.
Concrete applications of the preparations according to the invention are particularly stretchable pipes, gaskets for the construction and automotive industry, protective bellows for the automotive industry, injection-molded objects such as fixed wheels for the toy industry and the like.
