Description
The present invention relates to a method for separating contaminants from silicon.
For a variety of applications, e.g. in the production of Sis^ from silicon powder for very pure ceramic materials or within the photoelectric technique, there is a need for very pure silicon. Today, mainly the very pure, but also expensive, semiconductor silicon is used for this purpose.
In order to achieve a better economic situation, work is currently being done all over the world with the development of cheap methods for the production of pure silicon. The methods that have been developed the longest are based on the purification of cheap, but contaminated, silicon which is extracted in large quantities by the carbothermal reduction of quartz, the production of pure silicon by using previously purified carbon and quartz by the carbothermal reduction and the aluminothermal reduction of silicon tetrachloride with aluminium.
In all cases, further cleaning operations are required to reduce the high contents of foreign atoms in the form of boron, phosphorus, carbon, metals, metal oxides and oxygen to concentrations in the ppm range.
Methods are known by which the content of these pollutants can be reduced. In order to reduce high contents of silicon dioxide and carbon, which are predominantly present in the form of silicon carbide, in silicon extracted by carbothermic reduction of quartz, DE-A 3,411,955 and EP-Å 0,160,294 describe methods whereby molten silicon is filtered over graphite filters or SiC/Si composite materials, whereby the solid components remain in the filter. This method is not satisfactory from an economic point of view as the filter layer becomes clogged during operation and the cleaning operation is thus interrupted. To remove the disturbance, the reactor must be cooled from approx. 1420°C, cleaned and the filter material discarded.
Furthermore, a method is known from DE-A 34 03 131 whereby the silicon is melted in a graphite crucible, whereby the unreduced quartz and the unreacted coal are collected on the crucible wall. During continuous operation, slag accumulates on the crucible walls, which eventually leads to the crucible becoming unusable, thereby causing high costs.
I patentpublikasjonene DE-A 3.416.559 og DE-A 3.303.691 beskrives fremgangsmåter hvorved faste SiC- og Si02-forurensninger fraskilles fra silisiumsmelter ved sentrifugering og sedimentering. The patent publications DE-A 3,416,559 and DE-A 3,303,691 describe methods by which solid SiC and SiO 2 impurities are separated from silicon melts by centrifugation and sedimentation.
For å fjerne uoppløste forurensninger fra smelteflytende silisium er det fra patentlitteraturen kjent fremgangsmåter (DE-A 2.623.413, DE-A 2.929.089, EP-A 7063, DE-A 3.504.723, BR-A 83/6289, US-A 4.312.849, FR-A 2.465.684, US-A 4.298.423, DE-A 2-944.975), hvor smeiten behandles med forskjellige gasser. To remove undissolved impurities from molten silicon, methods are known from the patent literature (DE-A 2,623,413, DE-A 2,929,089, EP-A 7063, DE-A 3,504,723, BR-A 83/6289, US- A 4,312,849, FR-A 2,465,684, US-A 4,298,423, DE-A 2-944,975), where the smelting is treated with different gases.
However, with the described methods, an economic removal of metal oxides, especially aluminum oxide, is not possible. Furthermore, none of the methods can be operated continuously.
The purpose of the present invention is consequently to provide a method for separating contaminants from silicon which does not exhibit the above-mentioned disadvantages.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that by producing thin silicon melt layers in close contact with silicon-resistant substances, a strong reduction of the aforementioned pollutants can be achieved.
If it is ensured that the silicon melt can flow off, the contaminants remain as a coating that can be easily removed. The object of the present invention is therefore a method for separating impurities from silicon, which is characterized by the fact that the silicon in the form of powder or granules is melted into a silicon melt film which over a large surface is in contact with a silicon-resistant body and the melt is allowed to flow off, while the impurities remains on the surface of the body.
The previous history of the silicon to be purified is therefore irrelevant.
It can e.g. a milled metallurgical silicon with a purity of approx. 98# or also the silicon granulate produced according to EP-A 123,100 from the aluminothermic reduction of silicon tetrachloride.
A preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention consists in the silicon melt film being produced on an inclined surface with an angle of 5° to 60°, preferably 25°.
Spesielt gode resultater oppnås ved fremgangsmåten ifølge oppfinnelsen når overflateforholdet mellom silisiumsmelten i kontakt med den skråttstilte flaten i forhold til dens volum, er større enn 1 cm-<*>, fortrinnsvis mellom 10 cm-<*> og 30 cm-<*.>Particularly good results are achieved with the method according to the invention when the surface ratio between the silicon melt in contact with the inclined surface in relation to its volume is greater than 1 cm-<*>, preferably between 10 cm-<*> and 30 cm-<*.>
The method according to the invention can be used without disadvantage in different atmospheres. This can be both an inert gas atmosphere such as argon or helium, and also reactive gases with which further chemical reactions in the smelting can be carried out. Hereby, halogen-containing reactive gases, such as e.g. SiCl4 or chlorosilanes, but also mixtures with hydrogen or inert gases.
To remove undissolved gases from the smelting, it is advantageous to carry out a vacuum degassing at the end of the process.
According to the invention, the silicon-resistant body, on which the silicon melt film is produced, consists of ceramic materials, mixed-ceramic materials, very dense graphite and/or quartz. Especially suitable for the present invention are as ceramic material SiC, Si3N4 and/or Å12O3.
A particularly advantageous variant of the method according to the invention compared to other known cleaning methods consists in the method being carried out continuously.
Often, for the practicability of the method, it can be an advantage that the silicon is oxidized on the surface before melting.
The invention shall be illustrated with the help of the following examples.
Eksempel 1 Example 1
The experiments on continuous melting and simultaneous purification of silicon were carried out with a silicon sand which was obtained by a method known from EP-Å 0.123.100 by reducing SiCl4 with aluminum sand. With this method, a silicon sand with a grain diameter of approx. 1 mm.
This sand was, by means of a transport screw, fed into an inclined graphite tube heated to the silicon melting temperature, melted over the length of the tube and removed at the end of the tube as melt, respectively as a silicon granulate solidified over a drop. With a pipe inclination of 25°, an optimal product flow was achieved. Argon was used as protective gas. At a dosage rate of 1 kg Si/hour, the melting was operated continuously for 10 hours.
During the continuous melting, a separation of slag and Si melt was observed. During the smelting, the slag is separated and enriched at the product introduction side of the smelting pipe as loose dust. The slag was pushed out mechanically using a scraper. In the smelting, a separation of slag-forming elements such as Al, Ca and Mg took place (see table 1).
Eksempler 2 til 4 Examples 2 to 4
When carrying out experiments corresponding to example 1, different pipe materials were examined. Quartz glass, Si3N4~ and A^Os ceramic materials were used. For the method according to the invention, all pipe materials are equally suitable, as in all cases a good separation of slag and melt was observed, as well as a cleaning effect corresponding to example 1. Depending on the pipe material used, there is further in the slag, by reaction with the smelt , formed constituents (see Table 2).
Eksempel 5 Example 5
The removal of the residual reducing agent is also successful in the presence of substances that form slag with the reducing agent. Consequently, the silicon granulate to be purified in a further experiment was first oxidized with air to form S102 on the surface, and then the continuous melting was carried out.
This achieved a stoichiometric reduction of the aluminum content. This effect can also be achieved by adding finely divided SiO2 to the silicon to be melted.
