Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a dispersion consisting of water, powdered coal and additives, where the coal content is between 60 and 80% by weight, and the distinctive feature of the dispersion according to the invention is that the dispersion contains lecithin or other zwitterionic surface-active substance, which is adsorbed to the surface of the coal particles, and also polymers that interact with the aforementioned substance, at least one of which contains segments of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic character.
These and other features of the invention appear in the patent claims.
A dispersion of coal is considerably less polluting and can be handled more easily than solid coal and also eliminates some hazards in connection with transport and storage. Such a dispersion is also preferred from an economic point of view.
The reason for using coal dispersions is the planned increased use of coal as a basic energy source in large as well as small plants for the production of electricity and heat. The handling of solid coal in this connection is difficult for several reasons and the conversion of the coal into liquid form is generally considered one. interesting method. Chemical transformation of coal into a liquid product, so-called liquefaction, still cannot compete with oil and it is considered that this method can contribute to the global energy supply only marginally before the year 2000. Chemical transformation of the coal into a gaseous product, so-called gasification, seems to be a more promising method for the utilization of coal. However, even this method still involves considerable technical difficulties even if large resources have been spent on technical development.
Physical conversion is another method for converting the coal into liquid form and the invention relates to this method. It is carried out by dispersing the coal in a liquid which may consist of some organic fuel such as heating oil, methanol, etc., or water.
The problem with water dispersions of pulverized coal is mainly to make the dispersion stable at low viscosity. The coal particles must not settle during storage or transport of the coal dispersion. Furthermore, the coal dispersion must have a high pumpability and have rheological properties so that. it is suitable for burning by conventional technique which is probably modified to a minor extent.
Among earlier proposals for the stabilization of coal-water dispersions, the proposal described in the Russian publication Khim should be mentioned. Pereab. Top. 1975 30 (2) 19-29 which is summarized in Chemical Abstracts 87: 55532b. In this case, salts of polycarboxylic acids and polyphosphates, among others, are used as stabilizers. The viscosity of the optimal mixture is approximately 5 P at a coal content of 57 to 63% and it follows that this dispersion does not satisfy the requirements. Furthermore, the stability against sedimentation is insufficient.
The published Swedish application 7805632-2 deals with a coal-water dispersion in which a stabilizing effect against sedimentation is achieved by means of conventional electrolytes, among them polyphosphate, in accordance with the same principles as those described in the above-mentioned Russian publication . In this case too, the stability against sedimentation is not satisfactory.
US patent document 4,242,098 describes a coal-water dispersion in which stabilization is achieved by adding a number of water-soluble polymers (polyethylene oxide, polyacrylamides, etc.): This dispersion provides an improvement in relation to the above-mentioned dispersions.
The theory for the stability of dispersions has recently been considerably improved. The theory has been developed to include more concentrated systems, but above all a new type of mutual influence has been demonstrated.
In addition to previously known effects such as electrostatic stabilization with the help of surface-active substances and polyelectrolytes and steric stabilization with the help of polymers, there are so-called hydration forces as a further central effect. These forces have recently been demonstrated and have also been theoretically explained. The hydration forces, probably the sarm with other types of interaction, form the primary basis of the present invention and provide coal-water dispersions of the above type which are stable for a long time, which are well suited for direct combustion using available techniques possibly unless modifications. In accordance with the invention, this dispersion has achieved the properties indicated as desirable.
The dispersion has rheological properties that allow the dispersion to be pumped and transported through pipelines with greatly reduced friction and, above all, has a considerably improved stability against flocculation as well as sedimentation.
Når kull-vanndispersjoner som definisjonsmessig er termodynamisk instabile blir stabilisert blir sedi-menterings- og aggregasjons-takter redusert ved å When coal-water dispersions, which by definition are thermodynamically unstable, are stabilized, sedimentation and aggregation rates are reduced by
skape en barriere som motvirker partikkeltiltrekningen. Denne frastøtende virkning kan oppnås ved hjelp av create a barrier that counteracts the particle attraction. This repellent effect can be achieved by means of
På basis av disse three known principles: electrostatic stabilization, steric stabilization and stabilization by means of hydrating forces. The stabilization changes the energy in the particles and/or creates a high barrier which. prevents particle attraction. On the basis of these
prinsipper er det mulig å stabilisere høye innhold av kullpartikler i en vannoppløsning ved tilsetning av små mengder organiske tilsetningsmidler. principles, it is possible to stabilize high contents of coal particles in a water solution by adding small amounts of organic additives.
In order to create new colloidal systems, it is necessary that the system be given such properties that the forces of attraction between the particles are reduced to a minimum and a repulsive barrier against flocculation and subsequent sedimentation is developed. Some form of steric stabilization using hydrophilic polymers provides favorable conditions for a long-term stabilization of coal-water dispersions.
From studies of lamellar liquid crystalline phases in systems with ionic surfactants, it has been shown that these phases can swell and incorporate large amounts of water. This is explained by a repulsion through the water layer between adjacent layers of surface-active substance and can be related to electrostatic double layer forces. For zwitterionic substances such as the phospholipid lecithin, the swelling is less pronounced but nevertheless very clear. This shows that even in the absence of a net charge there is considerable repulsion. This force of repulsion, the so-called hydration force, varies almost exponentially with the distance and disappears over 2 to 3 Angstroms. The force is of a general nature and does not vary with the length of the alkyl chain or with the physical conditions of the chains (liquid or solid) and is also present when a quantity of charged surfactant is included in the system. Hydration forces have also been demonstrated by direct measurement of the forces between surfaces a few Angstroms apart. A theoretical model for hydration forces has recently been developed and it has then become possible to relate these forces to the presence of so-called mirror charges across interfaces where the effective dielectric constant changes. Such mirror charges with zwitterionic groups should be common in micro- and macro-heterogeneous systems. They are used in accordance with the invention to impart desired properties to a suspension of a low dielectric substance. Then a zwitterionic surface-active substance such as e.g. lecithin is adsorbed on the surfaces of the solid particles. Strong repulsive forces between the particles then occur at short distances. The principles will therefore be particularly useful for concentrated dispersions.
The invention shall be described in more detail in the following with reference to an example.
EKSEMPLER. EXAMPLES.
1. A non-micelle-forming zwitterionic surfactant such as e.g. lecithin or alkyl betaine, which as such is relatively difficult to dissolve in water, is first dissolved in an organic solvent. The solvent can consist of e.g. octanol, hexadecane or methanol and may be suitably recovered or may comprise a negligible proportion by weight of the dispersion. 2. The surfactant mixture is added to a dispersion of pulverized coal and water. Suitable fractions of the coal powder are from 1 to 200 µm (preferably 150 µm) with a wide size distribution (polydisperse coal powder). The particle size and size distribution can be selected in accordance with the desired stability. The smaller the particle size, the greater the stability, but it is expensive to grind coal down to submicron particle sizes. The particle concentration can be varied within a wide range. In consideration of economic and technical aspects, the particle concentration should be optimized from one case to another. Coal-water dispersions with a dry matter content between 65 and 75% by weight are of particular interest because these dispersions have good rheological properties, e.g. for transport in pipelines. In order to achieve the highest coal content (70 to 80% by weight), special consideration must be given to the size distribution. In the usual case, this can be done on the basis of simple geometrical considerations with regard to the minimization of the free volume when packing particles of different sizes.
After the adsorption process, two or more hydrophilic anionic and nonionic polymers are added to the dispersion to provide some form of a spherical barrier and to reduce the friction between the particles. One can e.g. choose between polyethers, polysaccharides, polyalcohols and polyacrylates. Particularly suitable for the invention are polyethylene oxide, copolymers of the polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide type, carboxymethyl cellulose and xanthan gum. The concentration of polymers in % by weight based on the total weight can be varied between 0.1 and 5%, but is economically optimal at approximately 0.5%.
To make the preparation of the dispersion more attractive as a non-polluting substitute for oil, some alkali salts or salts of alkaline earth metals may be added to the dispersion. Salts are preferably calcium hydroxide or dolomite powder. The salt neutralizes acidic gas components that are developed by oxidation of the fuel and can be recovered in a particle precipitation device.
In order to prevent the water from evaporating from the coal-water dispersion, an agent can be added to the dispersion which forms a monomolecular layer at the interface and such an agent is cetyl alcohol or hexadecanol.
The invention offers significant advantages over the previously known technique of stabilizing coal particles in a water solution. Due to an excellent sedimentation stability combined with favorable rheological properties for pumping, the obtained dispersion is well suited for transporting coal in a suitable way in lines or pipelines for use e.g. within the chemical industry or for direct energy production.
Combustion tests in boilers designed for heavy oil have shown that the dispersion is very suitable for full or partial replacement of oil.
