Abstract
1535980 Temperature-responsive actuating- elements TEKNOTERM SYSTEMS AB 25 May 1976 [26 May 1975] 21722/76 Heading G1D [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] Apparatus for controlling the rate of air discharge from a venting duct 1 of a natural ventilation system comprises a movable valve element 3 for mounting in the duct 1, a temperature responsive element 5 for mounting externally of the duct 1 exposed to the prevailing outdoor temperature and wind conditions, the element 5 being connected to valve element 3 for actuation thereof, and means for conducting a portion of the flow of outgoing air from the duct 1 into contact with the element 5, the arrangement being such that the actuation of element 5 by said portion of outgoing air decreases at increasing wind force, whereby element 5 operates so as to gradually close element 3 with increasing wind force, gradually open element 3 with decreasing wind force, gradually close element 3 with decreasing outgoing air temperature and/or decreasing outdoor temperature, and gradually open element 3 with increasing outgoing air temperature and/or increasing outdoor temperature. In the form shown, valve element 3 co-operates with a fixed or adjustable seat 15 which is below or above element 3 according to the construction of element 5. A wall 12 across the end 2 of the duct 1 guides said portion of the outgoing air-flow into contact with element 5 via openings in a guide sleeve 6a which is fixed to element 3 and co-operates with an opening 13 in wall 12. The remainder of the air-flow from duct 1 escapes through openings 17. In another embodiment, element 3 is a butterfly damper, actuated by a shaft (4), Fig. 1 (not shown) extending through the wall of duct 1, and said portion of the outgoing air-flow is conducted into contact with the element 5 via at least one opening (6) in the duct wall and an associated duct spigot(s). The temperature responsive element 5 may take the form of a helix of a bi-metal strip; or a double helix which consists of a bi-metal strip formed into a single helix which is then formed into a helical coil, as shown, or a stack of washer-shaped bi-metal elements.
