Description
Oppfinnelsen angår stabiliserte antiskumningsmidler på The invention relates to stabilized antifoam agents
basis av siliciumdioxyd. basis of silicon dioxide.
Antifoams based on silicon dioxide are well known as antifoams for aqueous systems. One of the problems associated with such antifoam agents, however, is that the silicon dioxide particles in them tend to separate from the carrier liquid (usually consisting of a hydrocarbon or a natural oil) in which they are suspended. Only by using very finely divided silicon dioxide particles can a certain degree of stability be achieved. Finely divided silicon dioxide particles are, however, only available to a limited extent and are more expensive than other grades of silicon dioxide.
Quenched amides are also well known as antifoam agents for aqueous systems. It is also known to use mixtures of silicon dioxide and quenched amides, each of these components being present in such quantities that a foam-inhibiting effect will be achieved.
In the patents below, the antifoam properties of various ingredients in the subject compositions are described, but none of these patents teach a combination of these ingredients to increase the stability of silicon dioxide-based antifoams.
US patent document no. 3076768 describes silicon dioxide-based antifoam agents that contain hydrophobic silicon dioxide, hydrocarbon oil and a dispersant.
US Patent No. 3207698 describes silicon dioxide-based antifoam agents that contain a special quality of hydrophobic silicon dioxide and hydrocarbon oil.
US Patent No. 3,652,453 describes amide-based antifoams which contain quenched amides, hydrocarbon oil and oil-soluble organic polymers.
US Patent No. 3677963 describes amide-based antifoams which contain quenched amides, hydrocarbon oil. oil-soluble organic polymers and fats.
The antifoam agents according to the invention are based on mixtures of hydrophobic silicon dioxide and oil to which a relatively small amount of a quenched amide has been added to increase the stability of these mixtures. In addition, oil-soluble organic polymers and surfactants can be added.
The invention thus relates to an antifoam agent for an aqueous system and containing 3-20% by weight of hydrophobic silicon dioxide suspended in a carrier liquid, and the antifoam agent is characterized by the fact that it also contains added quenched amide in an amount of 0.1-2.0% by weight for stabilization of the suspension of hydrophobic silicon dioxide and carrier liquid, optionally an oil-soluble organic polymer added in an amount of up to 25% by weight and optionally a surfactant added in an amount of up to 3.0% by weight, all percentages calculated by the weight of the antifoam agent.
The silicon dioxide must be made hydrophobic by roasting with silicon oil or in some other way. The hydrophobic silicon dioxide and the oil essentially have completely the antifoam properties of the present antifoam agents.
The amide, which must be quenched as described herein, is used exclusively to stabilize the antifoam. This means that it has surprisingly been shown that the addition of a small amount of quenched amide causes the antifoam to be stabilized by keeping the salicium dioxide particles suspended for a considerably longer time than if the amide had not been added. Of course, the quenched amide as such has antifoam properties. However, the amount of quenched amide used is not sufficient to significantly increase the effect of the antifoam.
The invention also relates to a method for the production of the present antifoam agent, and the method is characterized in that a carrier liquid is heated to at least 100°C, after which hydrophobic silicon dioxide is added in an amount of 3-20% by weight and mixed with the carrier liquid while forming a transient stable suspension that is cooled to room temperature or below, that an amide possibly mixed with a carrier liquid is heated separately until it has been melted or dissolved in the carrier liquid, that the amide's temperature is maintained for at least 15 minutes and the amide in an amount of 0.1-2.0 wt. % is quickly added to the suspension for quenching the amide, and that the mixture of hydrophobic silicon dioxide, carrier liquid and quenched amide is homogenized at a pressure of 70.3-351.5 kg/cm<2>

Areas of application for the present antifoam agents can be mentioned in boiler water, for refining sugar beet, paper production, textile production, in adhesives, cement and coating materials. These antifoams are particularly useful for defoaming black liquor from cellulose manufacture and for preventing entrapment of air in water-based paints and adhesives.
A. Bestanddeler A. Constituents
1. Hydrofobt siliciumdioxyd 1. Hydrophobic silicon dioxide
The hydrophobic silicon dioxide useful for use according to the invention can be produced in the form of any well-known quality of silicon dioxide, such as (1) a silica airgel which is a colloidal silicon dioxide which can be produced by displacing the water from a silica hydrogel with a low-boiling, water-miscible , organic liquid, followed by heating in an autoclave or a similar device above the liquid's critical temperature, after which the pressure in the autoclave is released, (2) so-called silicon dioxide liquor which consists of a colloidal silicon dioxide obtained by burning silicon tetrachloride and collecting the obtained silicon dioxide powder, (3) a precipitated silicon dioxide produced by destabilizing a water-soluble silicon dioxide under such conditions that a gel structure is not formed, but so that the silicon dioxide particles flocculate into cohesive aggregates, such as e.g. by adding sodium ions to a sodium silicate solution, and also aluminum silicate, copper silicate, magnesium silicate and zinc silicate etc. Silicon dioxide of essentially any quality and particle size can be used, although silicon dioxide with a more finely divided particle size is preferred. Hydrophilic, inorganic particles that can be expected to replace silicon dioxide, such as calcium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate, have not been found to be applicable.
250 - 350°C, i 0,5 - 2 timer. Any suitable method can be used to treat the normally hydrophilic silicon dioxide to make it hydrophobic. A method which has proven to be very satisfactory is based on spraying the silicon dioxide with silicon oil and heating it at an elevated temperature, i.e. 250 - 350°C, for 0.5 - 2 hours. The amount of silicone oil used can vary from 5% by weight - 100% by weight, based on the weight of the silicon dioxide. However, as a rule, it will be satisfactory to use a quantity of 7 - 25%, and this quantity is lined up.
The silicohol can be made up of a polysiloxane oil, such as an alkyl, aryl, alicyclic or aralkylsiloxane or -polysiloxane with a viscosity of 10 - 3000 cSt at 25°C. Preferred silicone oils include alkylpolysiloxanes with a viscosity of 40 - 100 cSt at 25°C. These alkylpolysiloxanes include dimethylpolysiloxane, diethylpolysiloxane, dipropylpolysiloxane, methylethylpolysiloxane, dioctylpolysiloxane, dihexylpolysiloxane, methylpropylpolysiloxane, dibutylpolysiloxane and didodecylpolysiloxane etc.
The finely divided silicon dioxide can also be made hydrophobic by treating it with vapors of an organosilicon halide or with a mixture of organosilicon halides. Examples of organosilicon halides which are suitable for this purpose are given in US Patents No. 2306222 and No. 2412470, and include alkyl (methyl)-,. aryl(phenyl)-, alkaryl(toluyl)- and aralkyl(phenylmethyl)-silicon halides. The treatment can be carried out by keeping the finely divided material in motion in a closed container in the presence of vapors of the treatment material, e.g. dimethyldichlorosilane. The amount of treatment is generally light and the length of treatment will depend on the surface area of the inorganic material and on the type of organosilicon halide used. As a rule, it will be satisfactory to use 5-15% by weight treatment agent, based on the weight of the silicon dioxide, and a treatment time of 0.5 - 2 hours.
Another way to make the silicon dioxide hydrophobic is to disperse it in silicon oil, i.e. in a concentration of 2 - 10%, and to heat the dispersion to 250 - 300°C for approx. 1 hour. The hydrophobic silicon dioxide can then be extracted by centrifuging the mixture after it has been diluted with hexane or a similar solvent, after which the solid material obtained is dried.
The hydrophobic silicon dioxide used will usually have an average particle size of less than approx. 10 (im, preferably below about 5 (am. It is most preferred that the average particle size is 0.02 - 1 (im. If the particle size is measured using the oil absorption value, 125 (g of oil absorbed per 100 g of silicon dioxide) will be the smallest useful value, and a value of 170 or more is lined up.
2. Bærervæske 2. Carrier liquid
The carrier liquid can be any material that is inert to the other components, immiscible with water, liquid at room temperature and atmospheric pressure and has a viscosity of 30 - 400 SUS (Saybolt Universal Seconds at 38°C).
Although any material satisfying the above conditions may be used, the preferred carrier fluids are natural oils, mineral oils and hydrocarbons.
As examples of preferred carrier liquids, mention can be made of mustard seed oil, castor oil, rice bran oil, soybean oil, corn oil, mineral locking oil, Stoddard solvent, petroleum naphtha, paraffinic mineral oil, naphthenic mineral oil, toluene, xylene, benzene, hexaji, h=>ptan, oetan , dodecane and ketosea etc. If desired, mixtures of two or more carrier liquids can be used. A particularly preferred carrier liquid is paraffinic mineral oil.
It should be noted that the carrier liquid, when used for quenching the amide, must have a lowest boiling point which corresponds to the melting point of the amide and an average of 6-25 carbon atoms.
A number of different amides can be used according to the invention, provided they have been "quenched" as specified herein.
Useful amides include amides obtained by reacting a polyamine containing at least one alkylene group with 2-6 carbon atoms and a fatty acid with 6-18 carbon atoms. An example of such amides is the amide obtained by reacting a polyamine and a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acids, such as hexane, decano, lauric, palmitic, oleic and stearic acids, hydroxy acids such as castor oleic acid, or naphthenic acids such as those obtained as by-products in the refining of petroleum. Natural mixtures of fatty acids, such as tall oil acids, tallow fatty acids and similar mixtures of natural acids, can also be used. Suitable amines include ethylenediamine, butylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, hexamethylenediamine, decamethylenediamine, hydroxyethylethylenediamine or 1:3-diamino-2-propanol etc. Monoamines cannot be used according to the invention.
One of the amides that can be used according to the invention can be prepared as follows: 95.7 parts by weight of bleached, hydrogenated tallow fatty acids are filled into a stainless steel reactor and equipped with a condenser, water trap and agitator. The entire process including filling in the reaction participants and cooling the reaction product is carried out under a nitrogen atmosphere. The filled acids are heated to 165 - 175°C, and 10.1 parts by weight of ethylenediamine are added while stirring. After the diamine has been added, the reaction mixture is heated to 180 - 185°C. The mixture is reacted at 180 - 185°C until its acid value is below 5 and its alkalinity below 0.6% by weight. The obtained reaction product of ethylenediamine and tallow fatty acid is then cooled to room temperature. If desired, the cooled mass can be ground to obtain a product in the form of a very finely divided powder.
Forskjellen mellom bråkjølingsprosessen ifølge de ovennevnte patentskrifter og den ifølge oppfinnelsen anvendte prosess, The "quenching" process is essentially the same as the process described in US patents no. 3652453 and no. 3677963. The difference between the quenching process according to the above-mentioned patents and the process used according to the invention,
Uttrykket " kaldere" betegner værelsetemperatur (22°C) eller en lavere tempera-ur. is that according to the invention the amide is not brought together with other components in the smelting than the carrier liquid. The quenching process consists in the amide being heated to above its melting point and kept molten for at least 15 minutes, after which the amide is rapidly cooled by (a) adding a colder carrier liquid or water, (b) rapidly allowing the melt to fall into a colder carrier liquid or (c) ) application of the melt on a cold surface with the addition of the coagulate obtained to a carrier liquid. The amide can optionally be mixed with part of the carrier liquid before heating, and the mixture should then be heated to a temperature at which the amide is completely dissolved, and then kept at this temperature for at least 15 minutes. In any case, it is important that the amide is heated long enough to destroy any crystal nuclei that may be present, so that the amide can more easily be given the desired crystal structure by means of the quenching process. The term "colder" denotes room temperature (22°C) or a lower temperature.
4. 01jeoppløselig polymer 4. Insoluble polymer
When an oil-soluble polymer is used, the amount of hydrophobic silicon dioxide can be reduced to 4-7% by weight to lower the viscosity. The agent's antifoam effect remains the same despite this reduction. The acceptable viscosity range for the agents according to the invention is 200 - 2,000 cSt, preferably 400 - 600 cSt.
5. Overflateaktive midler 5. Surfactants
According to the invention, the optional surfactants can serve as dispersing and/or emulsifying agents and can be anion-active, cation-active or non-ionic. The particular type of surfactant to be used is determined to a certain extent by the type of system with which it is to be used. The anionic surfactants generally seem to give the best antifoam effect and are preferred. As examples of suitable anion active agents, mention may be made of fatty acids containing 12 - 22 carbon atoms, such as stearic acid and soaps of these fatty acids, such as the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, aluminium, ammonium and amine soaps, e.g. triethanolamine stearate, and also rosin soaps. The soaps can be added as such or formed in situ. Examples of other suitable anionic agents are alkali metal salts of alkylaryl sulphonic acids, sodium dialkyl sulphosuccinate, sulphated or sulphonated oils, e.g. sulfated castor oil, sulfonated tallow and alkali metal salts of short-chain petroleum sulfonic acids.

B. Fremst illingsmetode B. Mainly illing method
Ved denne metode blandes det hydrofobe siliciumdioxyd først In this method, the hydrophobic silicon dioxide is mixed first
Efter homogeniseringen kan eventuelt den oljeoppløselige polymer og det overflateaktive middel tilsettes. with the carrier liquid which has been heated to keep the silicon dioxide particles suspended. The suspension is then cooled to room temperature or below, and the amide (possibly containing some carrier liquid) which has been melted and kept in a molten state for at least 15 minutes, is quenched by rapidly adding the amide to the suspension. The mixture of suspension and amide is then homogenized at room temperature and at a pressure of 70.3 - 351.5 kp/cm", preferably 105.5 - 228.5 kp/cm 2 , preferably at 210.9 kp/cm 2 . The mixture can also be homogenized while at a higher temperature, in which case the pressure can be higher. It has surprisingly been found that the homogenization can be carried out at a higher pressure for a mixture of silicon dioxide, carrier liquid and amide than for a mixture of carrier liquid and amide After the homogenisation, the oil-soluble polymer and the surface-active agent can optionally be added.

Anvendelser Applications
1. Malingfremstilling 1. Paint production
The antifoam agents according to the invention are useful in the production of latex and other water-based paints. It is desirable to have an anti-foaming agent in paints to prevent the inclusion of air bubbles due to handling or mixing etc. so that the coated surface is not deformed. The antifoam agents according to the invention can be added to the paint mixture at any time during its production, in an amount of 1.2 - 6.0 g/l, preferably approx. 3.59 g/l, paint.
The effectiveness of these antifoams in paints was assessed as follows. A test on the inhibition of foaming in paints was carried out by adding the antifoam to be tested to a latex paint that did not contain antifoam, and the mixture was shaken on a Red Devil type mixer for 10 minutes. The shaken sample was then weighed and the weight used to calculate the specific gravity of the paint (kg/l) and the volume percentage of trapped air. These figures were then compared with corresponding figures for an unshaken paint and for a paint shaken without added anti-foaming agent.
The test results using the above method were as follows: I. Shaking test using SBR paint (from New London Mills) which weighed 1.75 kg/l and was shaken for 10 minutes with antifoam added in an amount of 3>6 g/l. II. Shaking test using a paint (Conchemco's Deep Base #6212) that weighed 1.25 kg/l and was shaken for 5 minutes with an antifoam agent added in an amount of 7>2 g/l.11.1. A further examination of the appearance of the film was carried out using a paint (Conchemco's Deep Base #6212) in the form of aged samples after one week at 49°C and with the addition of an antifoam agent in an amount of 7.2 g/l.
2. Klebemidler 2. Adhesives
The antifoams according to the invention are also useful in the production of animal glue and other water-based adhesives. It is desirable to have an anti-foaming agent in adhesives to prevent trapped air bubbles from reducing the surface contact area and thus the strength of the adhesive joint. The antifoams according to the invention can be added to adhesives during the mixing of the constituent parts for these, in an amount of 0.05 - 0.5, preferably 0.1 - 0.3, parts by weight per lOO parts by weight adhesive solids.
Efter at den hadde nådd værel: temperatur, The effect of the antifoams in adhesives was assessed as follows. All parts are based on weight unless otherwise stated. 40 parts animal glue was mixed with 60 parts water at a temperature of 6o - 71°C. While stirring at a moderate speed, 3 or 4 drops of phenol were added to the mixture. 35 parts corn syrup was added to 65 parts of the above mixture while maintaining the above temperature and stirring. After all ingredients had been well mixed, the mixer was set to high speed, and at this stage 0.5 parts of the antifoam agent to be tested was introduced. High speed mixing was continued for 5 minutes at a temperature of 65.5°C, after which the sample was set aside for slow cooling. After it had reached room: temperature,
ble den erholdte geloverflate undersøkt for å fastslå om det forekom bobler eller andre overflateforstyrreiser. the resulting gel surface was examined to determine whether bubbles or other surface disturbances occurred.

3• Papirfremstilling 3• Paper production
Antiskumningsmidlene ifølge oppfinnelsen er også nyttige for The antifoam agents according to the invention are also useful for
For dette formål tilsettes antiskumningsmiddel i en mengde av 0,003 - 0,5 vektdeler faststoffer til cellulosemassen pr. lOO vektdeler tørr cellu-losemasse. to reduce existing foam (knockdown) and to prevent the formation of foam (inhibition) in black liquor during cellulose production. For this purpose, antifoaming agent is added in an amount of 0.003 - 0.5 parts by weight of solids to the cellulose mass per 100 parts by weight of dry cellulose pulp.
The following apparatus and the following test method were used to determine the effectiveness of various antifoam agents in suppressing and inhibiting foam in black liquor. The apparatus and method can, however, be used to examine any liquid that will cause foaming when stirred and/or heated.
A 100 cm 3 tall beaker was used as the main container for the liquid to be examined. A curved glass outlet fused to the bottom of the beaker was connected via a rubber hose to a centrifugal pump. This was used to continuously circulate the sample liquid from the beaker, into the pump and back into the beaker. The pumping was carried out at such a speed that the sample liquid in the beaker was stirred by the newly introduced sample liquid to such an extent that foam formation occurred. The pumping speed was approx. 7>6 1 per minute. The sample liquid entered the beaker at a location approx. 6 cm above the surface of the liquid in the beaker and support against the surface of the liquid in the beaker at an angle of 90°.
When carrying out the investigation of the antifoam agents, 500 cm of recently obtained concentrated black liquor was filled into the beaker at a temperature of approx. 75°C. This liquid, when calm, filled the beaker to a height of approx. S>3 cm from the bottom of the cup. This level was marked off and referred to as the 0 line. When investigating the inhibition, 0.1 cm of antifoam was added to 500 cm<J> of the sample liquid in the beaker. The pump and a stopwatch were started simultaneously. The foam height above the 0 line was measured at 15 second intervals for the first minute and then at 30 second intervals and recorded. When investigating the impact, the liquid was stirred and heated before the antifoam agents were added. After a foam had formed to a height of 8 cm, 0.1 cm of the antifoam to be tested was added and the results recorded as above.
The test results using the above method were as follows:
I. Hemning - sammenlignende forsøk I. Inhibition - comparative experiments
It appears from the above-mentioned experiments that the antifoaming agents according to the invention are very effective compared to known commercially available antifoaming agents both of the type hydrophobic silicon dioxide base and quenched amide base.
II. Inhibition - comparative experiment with increased amount of quenched amic
The above experiments clearly show that increasing the amount of quenched amide up to the concentration where it can be expected that it will exhibit an antifoam effect is fruitless. This suggests that the quenched amide is clearly not used according to the invention because of its known property as an antifoam agent. It should in fact be noted that the combination of the known anti-foaming agents hydrophobic silicon dioxide and quenched amide not only gives a synergistic increase of the anti-foaming properties, but that this combination in fact gives a reduced anti-foaming effect.
Stabilitet Stability
A test method was developed to investigate the effect of stabilized agents according to the invention in comparison with agents in which other stabilizing agents were used, and with non-stabilized antifoam agents of hydrophobic silicon dioxide.
En sentrifuge inneholdende de forskjellige midler ble holdt A centrifuge containing the various agents was kept
Midler som ikke inneholdt bråkjølt amid, ble separert i to faser, dvs. olje på running for 1 hour at a speed of rotation of lOOO revolutions per minute. The test tubes of the centrifuge were each filled to a height of 106 mm with the agents to be examined. The agents according to the invention were, in the cases where they were separated at all, as a rule separated into three phases, i.e. oil at the top, oil and quenched amide in the middle and silicon dioxide with some oil at the bottom. Agents that did not contain quenched amide were separated into two phases, i.e. oil on
Det annet tall betegner midlets viskositet før sentrifugeringen. the top and silicon dioxide with a little oil on the bottom. The first number in the table below denotes the height of the non-silicon dioxide-containing layer or layers. The second number denotes the viscosity of the agent before centrifugation.
All silicon dioxide qualities used for the experiment below were hydrophobic of the type that can be used according to the invention (unless otherwise stated). It appears that although silicon dioxide qualities with finely divided and medium particle size are preferred, silicon dioxide qualities with coarse particle size can also be used, depending on the choice of quenched amide. In this experiment, the large particle size silica actually consisted of medium sized agglomerated particles.
The first two amides in the investigation below were quick-cooled and of the type that can be used according to the invention. The third amide was not quenched.
As it is generally assumed that a medium with a higher viscosity will keep particles suspended better than a medium with a lower viscosity, the viscosity of each mixture was measured (number in parentheses). The mixtures were prepared using polybutene as a thickener. Although these mixtures were relatively stable, it should be noted that very large amounts of polybutene were required (resp.
Selv om 25 and 21%). A mixture was also prepared using a finely divided hydrophilic silicon dioxide as a thickener. Although
denne blanding var forholdsvis stabil, bør det bemerkes at et slikt siliciumdioxyd er meget kostbart og bare begrenset tilgjengelig. this mixture was relatively stable, it should be noted that such silicon dioxide is very expensive and only limitedly available.
Det er i virkeligheten en av fordelene ved foreliggende oppfinnelse That is actually one of the advantages of the present invention
The viscosity values (in parentheses) suggest that a high viscosity alone is not sufficient to stabilize the silicon dioxide suspension. This is evident from a comparison of stabilizers no. 2 and 6 together with finely divided silicon dioxide and stabilizers no. 2 and 4 together with silicon dioxide with a medium particle size.
For an assessment of the results in the table below, the comparisons should be made vertically, i.e. between different stabilizers using the same silicon dioxide. The larger the particle size of the silicon dioxide, the more difficult it is to achieve sufficient stabilization. A height of 2 or less is therefore acceptable for "t -i_i.cinir.^-c:;vu ph hovle c-ller less than that is acceptable for a silicon dioxide of medium particle size, and a height of 10 or less is acceptable for silicon dioxide with a large particle size.
