Abstract
Defoamer is prepd. by heating a mix of (a) a liq. hydrocarbon vehicle, (b) an oil-sol. organic polymer and (c) a wax and/or amide to 60-200 degrees C to give a uniform melt, coagulating the melt by rapid chilling to 40-180 degrees C by the addition of water, reheating the mix to 60-200 degrees C to a uniform melt and extending the mix by blending it with an inert liq. vehicle. Ingredient (c) is (i) an animal, vegetable, mineral, synthetic, microcrystalline or oxidised microcrystalline wax and/or (ii) an amide which is the reaction prod. of hexanoic, decanoic, lauric, palmitic, oleic, stearic or ricinoleic acid or naphthene acids, tall oil acids, tallow or hydrogenated tallow fatty acids with ethylene-, butylene-, hexamethylene- decamethylene- or hydroxyethylethylene-diamine, or diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine or 1,3-diamine-2-propanol. The initial mix may include (d) either a castor-oil alkylene condensate or castor oil and a sulphonated naphthalene condensate. The organic polymer (b) is pref. a vinyl acetate- fumaric acid copolymer esterified with tallow alcohol.
