Abstract
Description
Short designation: Ear tag for marking an animal.
The invention relates to an ear tag for marking an animal according to the preamble of claim 1.
A number of embodiments of this type are known from WO 91/00686. These ear tags are marketed in large numbers for marking pigs and cows, for example. In the known ear tags, the receptacle for the pen present in the second part is bounded by a ring of nylon, as can be seen in particular from Fig. 3 of the above publication. Surrounding the ring made of rigid nylon is a wall of a more flexible plastic material (polyurethane), which is integral with the plate body of the second part. In fact, the ring wall, as defined in the preamble of claim 1, in the known ear tags is thus formed by an inner ring of a rigid plastic material and a surrounding ring of a more flexible plastic material. When the ear tag is applied in the manner described in the said publication (see also EP 0 092 408), the annular wall has a twofold function. On the one hand, the ring wall serves to allow the head of the pin to pass through the collar part by radial expansion of the ring wall at the location of the collar part and to subsequently hold the head of the pen once pressed through the collar part. On the other hand, an important function of the annular wall is the "anvil function" in pressing the pen through the animal's ear. This "anvil function" involves forming a rigid support for the ear through the ring wall in an area opposite the point where the pin penetrates the ear. As Fig. 3 of the above publication clearly shows, one end of the annular wall forms a contact surface for the ear and the other end of said annular wall forms the annular support surface with which the annular wall lies against a jaw of the applicator. As a result, the ring wall serves as an anvil when the pen is pressed into the ear. In fact, two requirements are imposed on the ring wall. On the one hand, the ring wall must be able to expand radially at the location of the collar part in order to allow the head of the pin to pass. On the other hand, the force required to press the pin into the ear decreases as the ring wall forms a stiffer anvil for the ear.
It has been found that the known embodiment of the ring wall leads to an undesirably great pressing force for the pin when applying the ear tag. This can be explained by the following consideration.
When the pen is pressed into the ear, a part of the ear exerts a great force on the part of the ring wall lying against the ear. As a result of this force, in particular the part of the ring wall located in the pressing-in direction within the annular supporting surface bends inwards on the side of the collar part, so that the opening diameter of the collar part becomes smaller. This inward bending of the annular wall is assisted in that the annular wall in the region located near the annular support surface for the application pliers will radially expand due to the large load, which is possible because the annular wall is not supported in this direction by the jaw of the pliers. Clamping the second part in the jaws of the pliers in this place must be prevented because the ear tag must come off the pliers as soon as possible after application.
The present invention therefore aims to provide an improved ear tag of the type mentioned in the preamble of claim 1, which can be applied reliably with a smaller effort.
This object is achieved by providing an ear tag of the type mentioned in the preamble of claim 1, characterized in that the annular wall of the second part is manufactured at least in an area adjoining the support surface for the application pliers over its entire active cross-section a stiffer material than the plate body of the second part. This measure ensures that the ring wall forms a rigid anvil for the ear when the pin is pressed into the ear, which limits the required pressing force. The rigid anvil also improves pen penetration into the ear, ie a "neater" wound develops in the ear. Furthermore, the part of the rigid material ring wall which abuts the application pliers will hardly be able to expand radially when the ear tag is applied. As a result, the previously described decrease in the opening diameter of the collar part will be smaller than with the known ear tags. Both of the effects described have the consequence that the force required for pressing in the pin is less than with the known ear tags of the type mentioned in the preamble.
It is noted that simply designing the annular wall with a larger effective cross-section than with the described ear tags according to the prior art does not offer a practical solution. This would cause the total annular support surface of the ring wall to increase, with the undesirable consequence that the second part of the ear tag no longer fits in the corresponding recess in the jaw of the pliers, as shown, for example, in Fig. 3 of WO 91/00686 . These pliers have already been widely marketed.
It is further noted that ear tags are also known, wherein the ring wall of the second part on the side of the support surface for the application pliers is provided with a spherical or flat cap, which closes the receiving opening there to a receiving cavity open on one side. Such an earmark, which is not of the kind to which the present invention pertains, is shown, for example, in Fig. 9 of WO 91/00686. Due to the presence of the cap, the adjoining part of the ring wall cannot expand in the radial direction under load. As a result, such ear tags do not have the previously described problems which lead to an undesirably high pressing force. However, the use of these ear tags entails other problems in practice, for example the collection of material from the ear in the formed receiving cavity. This can lead to inflammation of the wound in the animal's ear.
Incidentally, ear tags are also known, the entire second part, including the ring wall, being made of a rigid plastic. However, this embodiment has the drawback that in that case the annular wall at the location of the collar part is so rigid that the radial expansion of the collar part necessary for passing the head of the pin only occurs when an undesirably large pressing force is applied. Furthermore, such an eartag has the well-known drawback that the rigid plate body can easily get caught behind something. This can cause damage to the ear tag or cause injuries to the animal. EP 0 177 201 also discloses an eartag, the second part of which comprises a sleeve made of rigid material, which is largely enclosed by softer material. In this way, an insufficient anvil function is obtained.
Advantageous embodiments of the ear tag according to the invention are described in the subclaims and the following description.
The present invention will now be further elucidated on the basis of an exemplary embodiment of the ear tag according to the invention shown in the drawing. In the drawing: Fig. 1 shows a side view, partly in section, of an ear tag according to the invention, Fig. 2 shows a front view of the ear tag in Fig. 1 in the direction of arrow A, and Fig. 3 shows the section in Fig. 1. shown part of the eartag on a larger scale.
The ear tag 1 described here with reference to Figs. 1-3 comprises a first part 2, a second part 3, and a pin 4. The pin 4 has a substantially conical tip-shaped head 5, which is one relative to the stem 6 from the pin 4 to the shoulder 7 protruding.
The ear tag 1 can be applied to the ear of an animal, for instance a cow or a pig, with a mounting pliers 8, of which only the two jaws are schematically indicated in Fig. 1. For a detailed description of a suitable application pliers, reference is made to EP-B-0 092 408. When applying the ear tag 1, the assembly formed by the first part 2 and the already with the ear tag manufacture with this part 2 coupled pin 4, placed in one jaw of the application pliers 8. The second part 3 is then placed in the other jaw of the application pliers 8. The ear is then placed between the spread-apart jaws of the application pliers 8, after which the jaws are moved towards each other by squeezing the forceps. As a result, the pin 4 is pressed into the ear. The coupling of the second part 3 and the pin 4 is then effected by pressing the head 5 of the pin through a collar part 9 of a receiving opening 10 for the pin 4 extending through the second part 3. The shoulder 7 of the pin 4 hereby has a larger diameter than the opening diameter of the collar part 9 of the receiving opening 10. The protruding shoulder 7 then lies behind the retaining edge of the second part 3 formed by the collar part 9, so that the second part 3 does not can get more off the pin 4.
As appears in particular from Fig. 3, the receiving opening 10 is bounded by an annular wall 11 of the second part 3. The annular wall 11, as defined in the preamble of claim 1 of the present application, is indicated here by dashed lines. This ring wall 11 forms at its one end end a contact surface 12 for the animal's ear and at the opposite end end an annular support surface 13 for the associated jaw of the application pliers 8.
At the height of the collar part 9 of the receiving opening 10, a plate body 14 connects to the outer circumference of the ring wall 11. This plate body 14 is generally provided with a numerical code or other visible identifying marks.
The annular wall 11 consists of a ring 16 of a rigid synthetic material, such as nylon, to be described in detail, and a part 17 sprayed simultaneously with the plate body 14 on the ring 16 as a whole. The material of the plate body 14 and of the part 17 is polyurethane, a significantly softer and more flexible material than nylon. A comparison with the annular wall shown in Fig. 3 of WO 91/00686 teaches that with the ear tag according to the present invention the entire effective cross section of the annular wall 11, when applied under pressure, in the support surface 13 for the application pliers 8 adjacent region, is made of a stiffer material than the plate body of the second part 3. As a result, the annular wall 11 according to the present invention forms a considerably stiffer anvil for the ear when applying the ear tag. This leads to a reduction in the required pressing force for the pin. A "neater" wound in the ear is also obtained.
In fig. It can be recognized in Fig. 3 that the effective cross-section of the annular wall 11 in the area surrounding the collar part 9 of the receiving opening 10 is not entirely manufactured from rigid material. In this area, the ring wall 11 consists of an inner ring section of rigid material (nylon) and an surrounding ring section 17 of a more flexible material (polyurethane). This ensures that the radial expansion of the collar part 9 of the receiving opening 10 required to pass the head 5 of the pin 4 takes place at a relatively low force level.
In fig. In Fig. 3 it can further be recognized that the nylon ring 16 has a portion 18 with a relatively small cross section at the transition from the collar part 9 to the larger diameter part of the receiving opening 10. In an attempt to push the head 5 of the pin 4 back through the collar part 9, the ring will tear 18 at this location. Re-application of the same ear tag is prevented by tearing off the ring 16. The portion 18 is dimensioned such that when the ear tag is applied, as described above, no tearing occurs at this portion 18.
