Abstract

The conventional appts. consists of a chamber which is defined by two pistons within a cylindrical casing. The chamber contains a matrix for the pressure reaction and there are mechanisms for producing a relative movement between the two pistons and the matrix to compress the reaction of the mixture. In the present modification the pistons are provided with a protective coating of metals or alloys of a tenacious nature, of a thickness of at least 1 mm. over the whole of the surface of the piston, situated inside the chamber at high pressure, and hence compressed between the pistons and matrix. It may also extend outside the chamber. The protective coating may be continuous or it may be divided into parts which can be subsequently welded together so that the thickness of each part undergoes suitable variations in the course of usage. Suitable tenacious metals or alloys are selected from iron, mild steel, or copper and its alloys, aluminium and its alloy, nickel and its alloys or titanium and its alloy. The cylindrical casing is preferably built up of a number of separate units, set one upon another, and if desired welded together. Suitable, for example, for making industrial diamonds from graphite.
