Abstract

A mixing device is described which fits into the conical bottom of a vessel and consists of at least one eccentrically placed scroll which rotates about its own axis and about the vertical axis of the vessel together with a central injection tube mounted in the floor of the vessel equipped with two sets of agitation elements, injection nozzles for introducing fludis into the vessel and an injection nozzle for introducing a gas. The gas injection nozzle is below the fluid nozzle and agitator elements and injects the gas downwards and outwards across the floor of the vessel. It is possible to arrange the central injection tube so that two separate fluids can be injected at the same time. The mixture is lifted by the scrolls to the surface of the vessel and sinks in the middle so that a vertical circulation is established. The rotation of the scrolls around the perimeter of the vessel further ensure complete mixing. The major problems of this type of mixing vessel are the temporary high mechanical power inputs required at the agitator and the danger that the solid in the mix may cause damage to the bearings in the central injection column. The above device does not suffer from either of these defects due to the gas injection. This has the effect of shielding the bearings from the mix and lightening the mixt to the extent that mechanical inpur may be reduced by as much as a third.
