Abstract

Prodn. of tobacco low in nicotine or not contg. nicotine comprises treating moistened tobacco with air contg. ozone. Specifically, the moisture content of the tobacco is adjacent to 25-35%, esp. about 30% and the pH value is adjusted to 8-9.5. The amt. of ozone used can be from 10-50g, esp. 25-35g/m3 of air. The process, also reduces the tar content. At the same tine the flavouring and colour of the tobacco is preserved. The nicotine is oxidised to nicotinic acid. Raw tobacco sheets (10kg) contg. 10% moisture and 1.5% nicotine are spread in a container and treated with steam for 5 mins. after which its temp. is about 90 degrees C and the moisture content is 30%. After the steam treatment, dry air contg. 30g/Nm3 of ozone is passed into the vessel at ambient temp. for 2 hrs. During the air treatment, the tobacco temp. gradually falls to ambient temp. and the moisture content to about 18%. The treated tobacco is dried to a 10% moisture content. The nicotine content is 0.4%. In the other example ammonia gas is used to adjust the pH to about 9. The nicotine content of the treated tobacco is 0.06%.
