Abstract

Prepn. of benzyl benzote (I) is carried out by reacting benzyl alcohol (II) with benzoic acid and/or benzoic anhydride in the presence of H3PO4 as catalyst. The process gives higher yields, e.g. >=90% based on (II) converted, than processes using H2SO4 or HCl as catalyst (cf DT615398). The reaction is pref. effected at 150-200 degrees C in benzene, toluene and/or xylene while stripping the mixt. with an inert gas (e.g. N2) to remove the H2O formed. The molar ratio of (II) to benzoic acid or anhydride is pref. 1-5:1. The H3PO4 concn. is pref. 0.01-10 (esp. 0.1-2) wt.%.
