Abstract

A tube is provided over at least part of its length with an external layer of synthetic foam. This in its turn is wrapped with coils of a thermoplastic strip, the overlapping sections of which are welded to each other. At least one undulating or zigzag reinforcement is embedded in the overlapping zones of the thermoplastic strip. At least two reinforcements may be included in the overlapping zones, one of which is straight whilst the other is an undulating or a zigzag filament. The crests of the zigzags or waves are pref. positioned in contact with the straight-running filaments. Pref. the covering layer is a strip of polyethylene and the layer of foam is polyurethane. The tubes, in which the foam gives buoyancy for use in dredging operations or in which the insulating character of the foam is exploited for the transport of heated fluids or liquefied gases, have good resistance to tear propagation.
