Abstract

A tunnel kiln heated by a mixt. of a combustible gas such as natural gas, and a gaseous mixt. contg. oxygen such as air, is used for the production of reduced ceramic objects. The materials to be fired are passed through the kiln and after heating, are allowed to cool off inside the kiln. The cooling is carried out in an atmos. consisting mainly of the combustible gas, whilst the gas contg. oxygen is fed into the heating zone, so that the cooling can take place under reducing conditions. In the cooling zone a partition is fitted limited a zone extending from the firing zone to the partition, in which the temp. is such that oxidn. of the hot ceramic material could take place. In the zone behind the partition which extends to the outlet of the kiln, the temp. is reduced so that oxidn. of this kind cannot any longer take place. In the second cooling zone, the cooling of the materials is effected by means of air, whilst in front of the partition the cooling is carried out by the combustible gas which, after preheating is fed into the firing zone. Maked it possible to produce blue roofing tiles in which the iron oxide present in the material is reduced, in tunnel kilns. The economies of energy possible in Hoffmann furnaces and tunnel kilns can thus be exploited in this processes.
