Abstract

The foot of an offshore structure is anchored to the seabed by driving one or more piles through a guiding element attached to the foot structure; the pile or piles being then welded in place, or secured by another suitable method. The guiding element has the form of the driven pile with a chamber taking up a relatively large intermediate space. This is provided with an access for a mechanic, and above and below it joins two relatively short guide tube stubs. When the pile has been driven into the seabed, the circular space between the pile and the guide tube stubs is sealed; the chamber being then pumped dry. An operative can then enter the chamber to make the fastening between the pile and the guide. The piles are hollow and an inner pipe section with a smaller dia. than the internal diameter of the pile is inserted into the pile at a point where it will be aligned to the working chamber of the guide. At the top and bottom ends of the inner pipe section between it and the inner wall of the pile a seal is fitted, and this space is also pumped dry to ensure good welds. Method is a much cheaper and more reliable method of anchoring than is obtained by pumping special concrete between guide element and pile.
