Abstract

Industrial processing of grape-pressing residues is carried out by (a) distilling to produce an alcohol-contg. distillate and an alcohol-free residue; (b) redistilling the distillate to produce ethanol or Brandy; (c) drying the alcohol-free residue; (d) separating the grape pips (for oil prodn.) from the dried skins; (e) subjecting the dried skins to continuus diffusion with an extractant comprising hot water and aq. mineral acid; and (f) treating the extract to recover Ca tartrate. Drying step (c) coagulates colloidal and coloured imporities so that these remain in the solid phase during the continuous diffusion step. Thus, the mother liquor remaining after sepn. of the Ca tartrate can be recycled to the diffusion step. This avoids pollution problems.
