Abstract

Penicillin derivs. of formula (I) and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts are new: (Z1 is 4-hydroxy-1,5-naphthrid-3-yl or the gp. where Z2 = H, 2-4C alkanoyl or 1-3C alkylsulphonyl). They are prepd. e.g. by acylating the corresp. 6-amino cpds. (II) with conventional reactive acid derivs. (I) are antibacterials, more active than other cpds. of similar structure, and useful in human or veterinary medicine; as disinfectants; for water treatment; preserving wood and paper etc. A specifically claimed cpd., 6-(D-2- 4-hydroxy-1,5-naphthyridin-3-carboxamido -2- 4-hydroxyphe- nyl acetamido)-2,2-dimethyl-3-(5-terazolyl)penam was prepd. from (II) and 4-hydroxy-1,5-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid as its mixed anhydride with ethyl chloroformate.
