Abstract

A device for cutting out the cloaca of a fowl carcase suspended by its feet on a conveyor, has a cutting mechanism moving with the conveyor. This includes a hollow cylindrical knife which rotates concentrically on a centralising axially displaceable spindle inserted into the cloaca opening so as to align the knife. The spindle is further attached to and enclosed by a spirally formed hook fitting concentrically inside the rotating knife. When the spindle is inserted into the opening it is turned with the hook over a certain distance on its long axis so that the hook acts as a corkscrew and grips inside the cloaca. This is then lifted towards the knife and is cut out. The hook then reverses and is released from the cloaca. The spindle is attaches securely to a curved stop bracket which as the spindle is inserted, engages between the legs of the bird and stops the forward motion of the spindle so that irrespective of the dimensions of the bird, the penetration into the carcase is the same.
