Abstract

A cooling device for directing a flow of water against a rapidly moving metal object, such as a strip through rolls for reeling, extnds with its flow channel across the full width of the object to be cooled. The flow channel narrows down continuously into a passage which in turn diminishes in width towards its outlet slot. The edges of the slot are lined by two rails of a metal resistant to corrosion, one of which has an unsupported zone of reduced thickness which can be deflected as required by adjusting screws spaced out across the sprayer. For cooling the roll in a hot strip bench, the sprayer has two ejection slots, whilst for the strip itself the sprayer has only one slot. Between the liner rails the slot narrows down at an angle between 15 and 25 degrees to a gap 1.5-3mm deep. The slot sprayer creates a continuous curtain by which the water is distributed homogeneously over the surface to be cooled without spluttering, whilst the deformable liners can be adjusted to give very accurate distribution of the water where-ever required.
