Abstract

A cable seal sub for incorporation in a well drill pipe string includes a tubular body having a lateral aperture through which a cable can pass and a packing assembly for sealing the aperture around the cable. It is partic. used when directional drilling is being carried out using a downhole mud motor and a steering tool, in which case the seal sub is coupled into the top of the drill string at the start of the drilling operation and the cable serving the steering tool is passed through the seal aperture. The cable does not need to be withdrawn each time a pipe section is added to the string during the directional drilling operation.
