Abstract
A less dense liqu. (oil) floating on a denser liq. (ater) is removed by allowing it to flow over a weir at the top of a vessel. The vessel is otherwise closed at the top. The overflow occurs batchwise. During a collection period the surface of the oil is kept below the weir by a gas vol. in the headspace. During the overflow period the vol. of the gas is produced so that light liq. overflows. Used in sepd. oil from water, esp. during marine drilling operations. Without the headspace gas the overflow is continuous and the light phase is strongly contaminated with heavy phase as it overflows. The method described reduces the contamination.
