Abstract

The spreader has one or more beams, lifting and securing ropes. There is a belt pulley (12) on a stationary mounting at each end of the beam (1), round which the securing (4) or lifting rope is reeved, so as to function as a single rope. A gearwheel (15) or other driving device engages with the portion of the rope between the pulleys, moving it in one or the other direction to suit the weight and shape of the item lifted. Locking devices are provided to prevent movement of the gearwheel. The rope can incorporate a rack (14) meshing with the gearwheel.
