Abstract

Incompetent formations are consolidated by contacting with a slurry contg. sand, an age-hardenable resin, and a coupling agent. The coupling agent forms a bond between the resin particles and the particles of the formation, thus increasing the compression strength of the formation, this is achieved without excessive loss of permeability. The resin is pref. a partially polymerised phenol-formaldehyde resin. The coupling agent is pref. a transition metal complex of an a, Beta-unsatd. acyclic carboxylic acid (esp. a Co, Cr, Zn, or Ni complex) or is an (aminoalkyl)ethoxysilane esp.
