Abstract
1417505 Acicular ferrimagnetic iron oxide BAYER AG 27 April 1973 [29 April 1972] 20163/73 Heading C1A Acicular ferrimagnetic iron oxide, with reduced remanence loss, containing 0À5-10 atom per cent of cobalt and 0À05-3% by weight of SiO 2 is produced by depositing SiO 2 on to acicular Co containing iron oxide hydroxide, or Co containing γFe 2 O 3 , dehydrating and converting the product into ferrimagnetic iron oxide by controlled reduction and optionally reoxidation. As an example, a solution containing FeSO 4 7H 2 O and CoCl 2 6H 2 O was added at 50‹ C. to NaOH solution with agitation. On completion of the precipitation air was introduced and the suspension heated to 70 ‹ C. until oxidation was complete giving α(FeCo)OOH. A dilute waterglass solution was then added and agitation continued. The product after tempering for 30 mins. at 750‹ C. and reduction at 400‹ C. was γFe 2 O 3 containing Co and SiO 2 which had a remanence loss of 9% after 30 minutes at 150‹ C.
