Abstract

Phenolic cpds. or their ethers are hydroxylated using practically anhydrous H2O2 in the presence of a strong acid. The H2O2 is pref. dissolved either in the phenolic cpd. or in esters or N-alkyl amides of phosphoric, phosphonic or phosphinic acids. The phenol/H2O2 solution is pref. made by distilling the phenolic cpd. in the presence of a H2O2 solution in a solvent with a b.pt. higher than the phenolic cpd. and mixing the peroxide before or after condensation; alternatively the vapour of the phenolic cpd. may be passed into the peroxide solution, opt. in both cases in the presence of stabilisers. Partic. using 3-20 mols, esp. 10-15 mols phenol, and 0.01 to 2 mols, esp. 0.1 to 1.5 mols, of strong acid and 0.001 to 1 mol, esp. 0.1 to 0.5 mols of stabilisers per mol of peroxide. Pref. stabilisers are the above solvents and pref. strong acids are sulphuric, sulphuric/phosphoric, fluorosulphonic acid opt. with SbFs, a perfluoroalkyl sulphonic acids or fluoro substd. sulphonic acid polymers. The reaction is pref. carried out continuously at 20-150 degrees C, partic. 30-100 degrees C. Phenolic cpds. are substd. phenols, hydroxy-naphthalenes-phenanthrenes, anthracenes and their ethers. Simpler than process using boric acid involving saponification of borate esters and without explosion hazard.
