Abstract

Metallic catalyst residues are removed from a solution of a homo- or co-polymer in an organic solvent by mixing said solution with an aqueous solution of an acid having a concentration of at least 15% by weight, then adding water and finally separating the aqueous acid phase containing catalyst material, from the polymer solution. The mixing of the polymer solution with the concentrated acid is preferably carried out in the presence of a small amount of dispersing agent, e.g. glycerol monostearate, an alkylphenyl polyglycol ether or an alkyl phenol polyglycol ether. Any acid that dissolves the catalyst may be used, e.g. nitric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, formic, acetic and chloroacetic acids may be used, and the amount added is preferably 1 to 20% by weight based on the amount of polymer dissolved. Preferably nitric acid is used, the concentration of the acid being 20 to 40% by weight, and the polymer solution is preferably kept at 40 DEG to 65 DEG C. during mixing. In the examples, ethylene-propylene copolymers in gasoline are purified.
