Abstract

The degree of coarseness of the particles passing through the dredger pipe is monitored by an acoustic device, typically a microphone (2) picking up the noise made by them as they travel along the pipe (6). The signals emitted by the microphone are transformed into signals fed to an audiometer. The sound generated can be picked up at a bend in the pipe, and the audiometer can be arranged to measure the sound where this exceeds the preset level for a particular particle size. The signals picked up and transformed can be audigraphically represented, and the output signal from the microphone can be coupled to the signals from the devices measuring the speed in the pipe and the concentration of material.
