Abstract
A middle distillate and a residual fuel oil with a low S content are produced by (a) distilling a high-sulphur atmospheric residue under reduced pressure; (b) thermally cracking the distillate; (c) distilling the cracked prod. at atmospheric pressure to form one or more light fractions, a middle distillate and a residue; and (d) catalytically hydrodesulphurising the residue from (a) before or after mixing with the residue from (b) to form a residual fuel oil. The vacuum distn. stage (a) allows thermal cracking to be carried out on the distillate alone, so that optimum middle distillate yields can be obtd. and the loss of storage stability associated with the thermal cracking of residue is avoided.
