Abstract

In a physical and/or biological purificn. process for waste water and sewage -, the latter is allowed to trickle, for a limited period, over the filter bed in order to build up a layer of sludge and micro-organisms. The grains covering the filter bed, are circulated from time to time and the sludge removed. To increase the efficiency of the sludge removal, the waste water is distributed uniformly over the whole of the filter bed by rotating distribution arms. The grains, with dia. of 6mm, are kept in a reservoir resting on a concrete base; a central well supports arms for recovering the sludge and washing arms. These rotate around two pipes, one admits compressed air and the other evacuates sludge. The air serves to aerate the biological layer on the grains. Circulation of the filter grains prevents clogging and efficiently detaches the sludge from the grains.
