Abstract

An effluent treatment plant consists of many parallel perforated elements, suspended vertically, over which the water is allowed to flow in a thin film. The biochemical action of the organisms which will start to grow on these elements cleans the water, assisted by air which is allowed to flow upwards between the elements, to encourage the growth of the organisms. Excess growths drop off under their own weight or by vibration or spraying. The effluent can be pretreated by an activated sludge process.
