Abstract

In the prodn. of anthraquinone by oxidn. of indanes of formula:- (in which R1, R2 and R3 independently are alkyl or R1 and/or R3 is H) with O2, in the gas phase, in the presence of V2O5 and/or vanadates of gp. IVa, IVb, Vb, VIIa and VIII elements and opt. oxides of gp. IV-VI a and b, VIIa and/or VIII elements, at 5-30 degrees C higher than the optimum for max. anthraquinone yield in the range from 250-460 degrees C. The proportion of water-insol. impurities is reduced to 1/2-1/4 of the original value, with only 1-2% redn. in the anthraquinone yield.
