Abstract

The machine is particularly for use with tomatoes, which are transported along a light source, and a signal is generated dependent on the amount of light reflected from them. The signal causes movement of a pivoting component affecting the direction in which the item travels. The component can be spring-loaded, and held in one position by a locking device; released on receipt of a predetermined signal. The items can be transported by an endless chain on which carries pivot, having pins directed by sets of points along different tracks. The points can in one position bridge the gap between two guide rods in line with each other, and in another extend at an angle to them, so as to raise or lower the pin on a carrier.
