Abstract

Sulphur is removed from the particulate material obtd., when stainless steel articles (e.g. rolled blooms) are ground to remove surface defects, by (a) grinding the matl. to comminute the steel particles and separate Sand sulphide components (from the abrasive) which have hardened on the particles, and (b) subjecting the steel powder to flotation and washing to isolate the metals and separate the remaining S and sulphide components. Practically complete sepn. can be achieved; the purified metal powder can be re-used for steel making.
