Purification of water by the biological breakdown of impurities in the presence of air or oxygen and treatment with active carbon, (a) active carbon with a particle size of 100-1000 mu, and more especially 400-800 mu is added to the water undergoing purificn. and is held in suspension during the purificn. process, and (b) at the end of the purificn. the suspension successively passes through two separate zones for the sepn. of active carbon and activated sludge, respectively, purified water being withdrawn from the second zone. The recovered active carbon is then regenerated and re-used.
