Abstract

Catalyst for the prepn. of conj. diene (co)polymers is prepd. by mixing (I) an organolithium cpd. of formula: R(Li)x or an organosodium cpd. of formula: R(Na)x (where R is a (cyclo)aliphatic or aromatic gp; and x is 1-4), and (II) an org. cpd. of formula IIa or IIb:- (where R' is a (cyclo)aliphatic gp; Y is O or S; n is 1-3; and M is Li when I is an organosodium cpd. and is Na, K, Rb or Cs when I is an organolithium cpd.). Pref. the diene is butadiene-1,3 or isoprene, and the comonomer is styrene or 3-methylstyrene. Gives (co)polymers with a low vinyl content. Copolymers have a random distribution of monomer units.
