Catalyst for the prepn. of conjugated diene (co)polymers is prepd. by mixing (I) an organolithium cpd. of formula R(Li)x or an organosodium cpd. formula R(Na)x (where R is a (cyclo)aliphatic or aromatic gp; and x is 1-4) with (II) an org. cpd. of formula R'M (where R' is a (cyclo)aliphatic or aromatic gp; and M is Li when cpd. I is an organosodium cpd. and is Na, K, Rb or Cs when cpd. I is an organolithium cpd.). Enables the vinyl content of the (co)polymers to be controlled at a low level. Copolymers have a random distribution of monomer units.
