Abstract

1394395 Making axle casings, tube expanding CIDIPA SA 2 June 1972 [2 June 1971] 25998/72 Headings B3A and B3J A method of making an axle casing comprises forging a one-piece unit having a central body 1 and two tubular portions 2 and then expanding the free ends of the tubular portions by a forging operation. The central body 1 is held in forging apparatus between members 11, 12 one of which is provided with a centering member 13 for locating the casing. An hydraulically operated forging tool 8 is driven into the free end of a portion 2 to form a contour 10. After forming, the tool is withdrawn, the casing is rotated through 180 degrees and the forging operation is repeated.
