Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate is prepd. by reacting ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate at 140 - 270 degrees C pref. 150 - 230 degrees C, and a pressure of 40 - 500 mm Hg pref. 75 - 400 mm Hg until the interesterification is >=98% completed, based on the development of >=98% of the theoretical amt. of methanol, to form a polyethylene terephthalate with a relatively low concn. of diethylene glycol. As a result of the low concn. of diethylene glycol, the polyethylene terephthalate has a higher crystallinity and m.p., and fibres prepd. from the polymer have a better heat stability and can be more uniformly dyed.
