(II) (2-16C alkane) is oxidised, to form a cpd. (I). (II) being contacted with molecular oxygen in a lower carboxylic acid contg. cobalt, and a methylenic ketone. (I) can be reacted with polyhydric alcohols or diamines to obtain polyesters and polyamides resp., useful in the preparation of fibres or plastics.
