Abstract

The title compsns. are in the form of capsules contg. several grains, each of which consists of 25-100 mg of a hexaene or heptaene polyenic macrolide and an absorbent material which binds the macrolide in acid medium, but releases it in neutral medium, the proportion of macrolide to absorbent being 1:2 - 1:8. The macrolides, esp. candicidin fongimycin, hamycin and mediocidin are used in the treatment of prostatic hypertrophy, hypercholesterolaemia, acne and for the control of cholesterol absorption from food. The macrolides are not released into the gastro-intestinal tract until they have passed through the stomach, avoiding side effects such as vomiting and diarrhoea. A preferred absorbent is CaCO3.
