Abstract

Process for polymerisation of mono- or polyunsatd. olefinic compsn. in which polymn. initiation is achieved by combination of one or more diacyl peroxides or peresters of alpha,beta-unsatd. -gmma-carbonylated acids of structures (I) and (II). with a hetero-compd. chosen from (a) polyfunctional sulphydryl compsn. e.g. mercaptocarboxylic acids HO and NH2-mercaptoamino acids and esters, (b) compds. with sulphydryl grps. such as HS-C=N salts, dithiocarbonates, thiocarbonamides, thiourea, dithiophosphates etc., (c) alkyl or aryl sulphonyl hydrazides or (d) C1-C6 tri-alkyl phosphines or phosphites. Very low temp. polymerisation of a wide range of monomers such as unsatd. polyesters ethylene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate styrene, acrylonitirle divinylbenzene and (meth)acrylates is readily obtained giving polymers of good physical properties.
