Abstract

(Co)polymerisation of ethylene is carried out in an autoclave (1) connected to an exhaust duct (7) via a pressure operated valve (5). When the pressure in the autoclave reaches a predetermined valve the valve (5) opens allowing the decomposition gases to escape into the exhaust duct, and in a 10 second period after the valve has opened, at least 0.3 (pref. 0.8) k gm of water/k gm of contents in the autoclave is released into the exhaust duct. (7). The water evaporates rapidly thereby cooling the decomposition gases and lowering the temperature below a value at which spontaneous combustion might occur. Fire risk due to spontaneous combustion of the decomposition gases is eliminated.
