Abstract
Process concerns chloride conversion using HNO3, involving the formation of Cl2 and NOCl gases. The conversion is effected by an HNO3 soln. which is recycled and the treatment of the NOCl-Cl2 mixture is effected using a second HNO3 soln. which is also recycled. The NOCl is oxidised to NO2 and Cl2; the Cl2 is separated from NO2 removed, and the NO2 is reabsorbed into the diluted HNO3 (caused by formation of NOCl) to readjust the concn. of the HNO3. The oxidn. NOCl right arrow NO2 + Cl2 is effected using 2.5-4 x the stoichiometric quantity of HNO3 necessary, and the 66-72 wt.% HNO3 is continuously removed. The NO2 is absorbed in the 65-72% wt. HNO3 to give an acid of 75 wt.%. This absorption is effected in the presence of O2 having a 95% by volume contact of O2. The nitrous oxides not absorbed are recirculated. Water, introduced with HNO3 and liberated during the reaction process, is removed from the nitric cpd. contng. reaction mixture provided by the chloride conversion.
