Abstract
1,130,801. Fibre-reinforced synthetic resins. FIBERFIL Inc. 13 Dec., 1966 [15 Dec., 1965], No. 55710/66. Heading C3P. A fibre-reinforced synthetic thermoplastic resin is produced by working together into a mix the reinforcing fibres and a liquid comprising a liquid precursor of the resin which is the monomer in the unpolymerized and/or partially polymerized state and has a viscosity of not more than 200,000 cp. at the temperature at which working is commenced, forcing the mix to flow under pressure along a predetermined flow path while continuing its working at least until the fibres have become uniformly dispersed throughout the mix, controlling the temperature of the mix along the flow path to effect polymerization of the liquid resin precursor and extruding the mix through a restricted opening with the resin polymerized to such an extent that the extrudate is solid at the temperature prevailing outside the extruder. In an example a mixture of polystyrene and glass fibres together with a mixture of styrene monomer and polymer, tert. butyl peracetate and ditert. butyl peroxide were treated as above in an extruding apparatus which is illustrated by 4 Figs. (not shown).
