Abstract

Protective clothing is made by applying to one side of a fabric a coating of a substance which can be converted by gelling, curing or the like to a durable solid, the nature of the substance and its manner of application being such that there is no penetration through the fabric, thereafter applying to the said substance a further substance of such composition and in such a manner that it modified the composition and rheological properties of at least the outer layers of the first substance so that more of it can be drained off than would otherwise be possible, draining by the desired amount, and converting the coating to a solid without penetration through the fabric. The fabric may be for example a pre-shaped glove lining and be supported on a former, and the substances may be applied by dipping. The first substance may be a suitably plasticized polymer composition, and the further substance may contain the same composition together with more plasticizer, or consist wholly of a plasticizer or solvent; it may contain grains of solid material, to provide a rough coating to the finished article. In tests, knitted glove liners are mounted on formers and coated by dipping with a liquid mix containing polyvinyl chloride powder plasticizers, stabilizers and pigment, drained, and dipped in the same mix with added plasticizer, with or without additions of "Geon" (Registered Trade Mark) 202 polymer or silica sand, or in plasticizer alone, or in toluene, again drained and cured. In further tests the liners are first dipped in a mix containing polyvinyl acetate or polyvinyl alcohol, glycerine and water, and then in hot water.
