Description
DEVICE FOR COLLECTING THRASH FROM ROADSIDES AND METHOD THEREFOR
The present invention relates to a device for collecting thrash from roadsides. The invention further relates to a method for collecting trash from roadsides.
Known from practice are mowing devices which can be connected to a mowing arm. This mowing arm can be connected to a tractor that can control the mowing arm. The known mowing devices are used to mow roadsides. The tractor can drive on the road while the mowing device is positioned through controlling the mowing arm on the roadside. The mowing arm is also known as an extension arm or boom.
It is further known that roadsides are littered with thrash. The thrash can for example be glass bottles, which can damage the mowing device when the roadside is mowed. Another disadvantage of the thrash placed on the roadside is that after mowing the residual grass cannot be used for biomass in a composting facility, as the residual grass is mixed with the thrash.
Known methods to remove thrash from the roadsides is workers picking up thrash by hand.
A disadvantage of worker picking up thrash by hand is that in this way picking up thrash is time- consuming and therefore expensive. Furthermore, the workers walking on the roadside to pick up thrash is dangerous, as there is a chance of the workers having a collision with cars driving on the road next to the roadside.
It is an object for the present invention to obviate or at least reduce the abovementioned problems. In particular, it is an object of the present invention to reduce the thrash on roadsides in a fast and safe manner.
This object is achieved by a device for collecting trash from roadsides, the device comprising: - a frame comprising an inner space, a top-side and a bottom-side, wherein at the top- side a connection is provided that is configured to be connected to a vehicle; - arotation assembly having a rotation direction, wherein the rotation assembly is at least partially arranged in the inner space of the frame; - a plurality of tines for picking up roadside trash, the tines extending outwardly from the rotation assembly, wherein the rotation assembly is arranged in the frame such the tines extend at least partly out of an opening provided in the bottom-side of the frame; and - a suction opening arranged on the frame, wherein the suction opening is configured to be connected to a suction hose such that a first type of trash can be removed via the suction opening.
An advantage of the tines extending at least partially out of the opening of the frame is that the thrash on the roadside can easily be picked up by the tines when the rotation assembly is rotating thus making the tines rotate. As the device can be connected to a vehicle via its connection, the picking up of the thrash on roadsides can be done machinal. This prevents accidents along the roadside as no workers are needed to pick up the thrash manually. A further advantage of the present invention is that due to the suction opening the thrash that is picked up can easily be removed from the device through a suction hose that is configured to be connected to the suction opening.
The connection is configured to be connected to an extension arm, mowing arm, or boom that is provided on a vehicle. The vehicle can be a tractor or a vehicle specially configured to perform work on roadsides. The connection can also be configured to be connected to a front of a tractor or to the back of a trolley or trailer that is connected to a tractor or vehicle.
Preferably, the rotation assembly is positioned in the device such that the tines are configured to touch the roadside during rotation of the rotation assembly. The skilled person understands that touching also comprises a near touching, for example the tines being positioned at its lowest point, that is a point closest to the roadside, less than 2 em from the roadside. The tines at least have such a distance to the roadside that they are capable of picking up thrash positioned on the roadside. The suction opening is preferably arranged at a top side of the frame. The rotation assembly rotates such that when tines extend out of the opening of the frame, the tines rotate with the moving direction of the device.
The moving direction in the present application can be understood as extending from the back side to the front side and is the direction is which the device is configured to move during (normal) operation. The bottom-side of the frame is to be understood as the side of the frame that is configured to be faced towards the roadside during operation. The top side of the frame is opposite of the bottom-side of the frame.
In an embodiment according to the invention the device comprises a bin provided in the frame for collecting a second type of trash, wherein the bin is positioned behind the suction opening as seen in a moving direction.
An advantage of the bin is that in the bin the second kind of thrash can be collected. The second kind of thrash is thrash that is too heavy to be suctioned up through the suction opening.
Examples of second kind of thrash may be glass and/or stone objects. Preferably, the bin is positioned closer to the back side of the device than the suction opening. In this way, the suction opening is positioned before the bin, ensuring that the first kind of thrash 1s removed from the tines before the second kind of thrash is collected in the bin.
Another advantage is that in this way an automatic separation between the first and second kind of thrash 1s achieved. This makes the sorting of the thrash more efficient, as part of the sorting of the thrash is already achieved with the device according to the invention.
In an embodiment according to the invention the rotation assembly comprises a conveyor belt assembly, wherein the tines are extending outwardly from the conveyor belt.
Preferably, the conveyor belt assembly comprises at least two pulleys and a conveyor belt that rotates around the at least two pulleys. Preferably, at least one pulley is the drive pulley. The at least two pulleys of the conveyor belt assembly are preferably positioned such that a substantial part of the conveyor belt, during rotation around the pulleys, travels substantially parallel and faced to the roadside.
An advantage of the convevor belt assembly is that it can provide a longer area of exposure of the tines to the roadside. In this way, more trash can be picked up from the roadside by the tines.
The conveyor belt assembly provides a convenient rotation assembly.
In an embodiment according to the invention the conveyor belt is substantially air- impermeable.
Air-impermeable can be understood as airtight. The conveyor belt being air-impermeable can be understood as meaning that at most 10 percent of the air can permeate through the conveyor belt.
The air-impermeable conveyor belt prevents unwanted suctioning of for example sand from roadside into the suction opening. Another advantage is that the insects and other animals being present on the roadside are not suctioned into the suction opening. This provides an environmentally friendly device. The air-impermeable conveyor belt can be obtained by providing a conveyor belt without any openings provided therein. For example, the conveyor belt can be a sheet of closed flexible material.
In an embodiment according to the invention the frame is provided with at least one wheel assembly comprising at least one wheel, wherein the wheel assembly 1s provided at the bottom- side of the frame.
The wheel is configured to be placed on the roadside when the device is positioned above the roadside to collect thrash. An advantage of the wheel is that the device is more stable when the device moves over the roadside. A further advantage of the wheel is that it carries at least part of the weight of the device. This achieves that not the full weight of the device connected to the connection, for example the extension arm, is on the tines, thereby preventing wear and/or breaking of the tines.
In an embodiment according to the invention the at least one wheel is height adjustable.
Due to the wheel being height adjustable the distance of the tines to the roadside can be adjusted. This is advantageous as the height of the tines can be adjusted to the height or density of the vegetation on the roadside, such that an effective picking up of the thrash that is positioned on the roadside is ensured.
In an embodiment according to the invention a surface area of the at least one wheel when viewed In a transverse direction is at most 15%, preferably at most 10%.
By providing the abovementioned surface areas of the wheels, the wheels do not harm the plants/insects as much when the wheels drive over the roadside. In this way the surface area of the device that is going over the roadside is limited, thereby providing an environmentally friendly device.
In an embodiment according to the invention the device comprises two wheel assemblies each having at least one wheel, wherein the at least one wheels of each wheel assembly are positioned in line seen in the moving direction of the device.
In an embodiment one or more of the wheels of the wheel assemblies can be embodied as a roller. The roller may extend in a transverse direction, meaning a direction perpendicular to the moving direction. The roller may comprise thickened ends such that only a part, preferably the thickened ends, of the surface of the roller contacts the roadside. This prevents insects from being crushed by the roller. In an embodiment the thickened ends result in 85% of the roller being in contact with the roadside when in use.
The wheels being positioned in line ensures that the surface area of the device that is going of the roadside is minimized, thereby providing an environmentally friendly device.
In an embodiment according to the invention the device further comprises a trash wiper provided for an opening of the bin for wiping the trash of the tines into the bin.
The thrash wiper is for example a brush provided near the opening of the bin. The thrash wiper achieves that the thrash positioned on the tines is effectively removed therefrom and collected into the bin. Preferably, the tines move during rotation around the pulleys through the thrash wiper such that an effective removal of the thrash from the tines is achieved.
In an embodiment according to the invention a trash collecting plate is provided at a front side of the frame such that the tines during rotation move trash upwards against the trash collecting plate.
The thrash collecting plate is preferably provided substantially upright relative to the roadside, meaning that it substantially extends in the direction of the bottom side to the top side of the frame or device. The thrash collecting plate may be positioned near a pulley of the conveyor assembly.
In an embodiment according to the invention the trash collecting plate is pivotable.
Due to the thrash collecting plate being pivotable the picking up of thrash with the tines is improved.
In an embodiment according to the invention a rotation speed of the rotation assembly is adjustable.
An advantage of the rotation speed of the rotation assembly being adjustable is that the size of the thrash that is picked up can be adjusted. For example, when the rotation speed is high, the size of the thrash that can be picked up is smaller than when the rotation speed is low. This is due to the effect that a lower rotation speed gives the thrash more opportunity to slip through the 5 tines during rotation.
In an embodiment according to the invention the bin is pivotably attached to the frame.
Due to the bin being pivotably attached the bin can be easily emptied in a container that may be attached to a vehicle.
The mvention further relates to a thrash collection assembly, wherein the thrash collection assembly comprises: - a vehicle; - an extension arm provided on the vehicle; - a device according to any one of the foregoing embodiments that is connected with its connection to the extension arm; - a first and second container operatively connected to the vehicle: and - a suction hose that is connected to the suction opening and extends into the first container.
The thrash collection assembly provides similar effects and advantages as for the device.
In an embodiment according to the invention a suction force in the suction hose is adjustable.
By the suction force in the suction hose being adjustable, the weight of the first kmd of thrash that is suctioned up can be set.
The invention further relates to a method for collecting trash from roadsides, comprising: - providing a thrash collection assembly according to any of the foregoing embodiments; - collecting trash deposited on the roadside by rotating the rotation assembly.
The method provides similar effects and advantages as for the device and the thrash collection assembly.
In an embodiment according to the invention the method further comprises: - placing the device above the second container; - pivoting the bin such that it opens; and - collecting the second part of trash inside the second container.

Attached to conveyor belt 20 and extending therefrom are tines 18. Tines 18 are provided on conveyor belt 20 at regular intervals. The position of rotation assembly 12 and the length of tings 18 are adjusted such that tines 18 move substantially over roadside 7 when device 2 moves in moving direction M. Tines 18 are extending out of opening 22 provided on bottom-side 8 of frame 4. Provided at front side 7 and near second pulley 16 is thrash collecting plate 28 for ensuring that thrash 26 is brought upwards on tines 18.
Provided at top side 6 of frame 4 is suction opening 24. Suction opening 4 is connectable to a suction hose of for example a tractor. Suction channel 25 extends from inner space 5 to suction opening 5 such that first type of thrash 40 can be suctioned from conveyor belt 20. Provided behind suction opening 24 as seen in moving direction M is bin 30. Bin 30 is configured to collect second kind of thrash 42 that is not suctioned via suction channel 25 and suction opening 24. Second kind of thrash 42 is generally heavier than first kind of thrash 40. First kind of thrash 40 could for example be plastic and/or paper objects, while second kind of thrash 42 could for example be stones and/or glass objects. Thrash wiper 32 is provided near the opening of bin 30. When tines 18 move in rotation direction D around first pulley 14 they are configured to move through thrash wiper 32 which remove thrash 26 still positioned between or on tines 18 and collect thrash 26 in bin 30.
Device 2 further comprises first wheel assembly 36 comprising first wheel 37 and second wheel assembly 38 comprising second wheel 39. First wheel assembly 36 is provided on front side 7 and second wheel assembly 38 is provided on back side 9. First wheel 37 and second wheel 39 are both adjustable in height compared to frame 4, such that the distance of tines 18 to roadside 7 can be adjusted to the preference of the user of device 2. Second wheel 39 can also be embodied as a roller.
Device 2 (figure 2A-B} comprises frame 4. Provided in inner space 5 of frame 4 is rotation assembly 12 comprising convevor belt 20 and tines 18 extending from conveyor belt 20. In the illustrated embodiment two tines 18a. 18b extend from a common point 19 on conveyor belt 20.
Tines 18a, 18b are provided under angle o and both make an angle o/2 relative to line P extending orthogonally out of conveyor belt 20. Tines 18 are provided in rows 22a, 22b, 22c on conveyor belt 20, wherein on each row 22a, 22b, 22c points 19 are regularly positioned with distance L in between points 19. Thrash 29 can be picked up by tines 18 while conveyor belt 20 rotates in rotation direction D around second pulley 16. It is clear to the skilled person that tines 18 can also extend perpendicularly to conveyor belt 20.
Tractor 44 (figure 3) is provided with extension arm 46. Coupled to extension arm 46 is device 2 which is connected with connection 10 to extension arm 46. Trailer wagon 52 is coupled to tractor 44 and is provided with suction turbine 50 and hydraulic power unit 54. By positioning device 2 on roadside first wheel 37 and second wheel 39 of first wheel assembly 36 and second wheel assembly 38 touch roadside 7. When device 2 moves over roadside 7 rotation assembly 12 is driven by hydraulic power unit 54. Hydraulic power unit 54 drives first pulley 14 which rotates in rotation direction D. The rotation of first pulley 14 move conveyor belt 20 over first pulley 14 and second pulley 16. Tines 18 extending out of conveyor belt 20 move during a full cycle subsequently around first pulley 14, substantially parallel to roadside 7 towards second pullev 16, around second pulley 16, and upwardly inclined towards first pulley 14. Thrash 26 laying on roadside 7 is taken along by tines 18. Tines 18 then move towards thrash collecting plate 28 such that thrash collecting plate 28 ensures that thrash 26 stays on tines 18 when tines move around second pulley 16. When thrash 26 positioned on tines 18 moves around first pulley 14, first kind of thrash 40 is suctioned away through suction channel 25 and suction opening 24. Second kind of thrash 42 which is too heavy to be suctioned away is collected in bin 30.
